Two new plans to protect against human trafficking to be proposed

BANGKOK, 7th November 2017 (NNT) – The Ministry of Labor has prepared two plans to strengthen protection against human trafficking with a focus on protecting employees and matching international practices.

Permanent Secretary for Labor, Jarin Jakkapak has advised that the fifth meeting of the committee for remedying human trafficking and illegal labor gave its stamp of approval to the two plans.

The two are a legal reform and prosecution plan that includes protection and reparations for human trafficking victims, and one derived from conferences with the European Union’s labor body. Both are to be put to the National Reform Steering Assembly on November 13.

The permanent secretary also indicated that a program to scan and document the retinas of some 90,000 foreign laborers operating in 22 coastal provinces has so far succeeded in processing 28,347 individuals and is likely to be completed on schedule by March 21, 2018.

Wait a moment... I am confused... I am sure I read in a report from the government here about a year ago, that there was no human trafficking in Thailand?

Plans that will not succeed quickly. If elections are held in 2018, the new administration may have a different approach - unless of course Prayut is the next administration no matter whether there's an election or not.

Note that as of July 2016 Thailand remains blacklisted by the US for human trafficking.

Now almost sixteen months later the Ministry of Labor has prepared two plans to allegedly strengthen protection against human trafficking.

Also note that while the military that controls the current government, there appears that the military  has no role in any plans internally to reduce human trafficking, ie., disband ISOC. Amazingly, the military government denied in July 2017 that trafficking syndicates still flourish, saying it has largely stamped out human trafficking.
