It appears some (all?) immigration offices won't extend B visas to a full year any more for some teachers.

They have to pay for an extension every 90 days = 1900 baht each time

Has anyone experienced this?

How ridiculous! Does that mean schools cannot offer 1 year contracts?

Sent from my SM-G930F using Thailand Forum - Thaivisa mobile app

Im sure they can offer the contract, they just have to go back to immigration every 90 days. They also have to deal with work permits.

It also seems that it has prevented immigration from checking documents fully as they dont have time.

Chonburi and Rayong are the biggest industrial area in Thailand, so there is a big market for corporate teachers. It seems immigration are determined to force as many teachers as possible to work outside the law

Same in Nakhon Si Thammarat... private schools can only get 90 day extensions to non immigrant B visa's. Some private schools will obviously try to pass on this charge to you so before you even take the job make sure you have discussed this issue/charge.

I actually tutor/teach government officials including Police and immigration so no favourtism shown on this one. This change is probably due to a combination of the private schools being unscrupulous and selling extensions under the table to tourists who want to stay longer and the government sucking the private schools for more of their massive profits.

It does have to be said working as a teacher in Thailand is probably one of the worst locations in SE Asia regarding being valued or treated fairly... short termist attitudes and endemic corruption make for a very poor standard of English for the entire country.

Biggest problem being that Thailand is unlikely to reap the real benefits of ASEAN as the Chinese and Japanese will just divert their investment $Billions elsewhere.

HoHum... Taiwan looks interesting.

Just to be clear, is this also the case for someone whose visa was used years ago, but has been getting annual extensions of stay?

I can't confirm that but seems likely... problem being that some immigration offices implement immediately and some don't... random implementation of Thai law/rules being the norm of course.

It probably would make no difference if they were applying at an office that have decided to only do 90 day or 6 month extensions.
