Thailand a coconut shell?

How do they explain the phenomena of locals wanting out, while foreigners wanting in?

See the queues at Immigration...

The locals already know what Thailand really is, the foreigners have yet to discover the country beyond the bars of Pattaya and PatPong? Could be a reason.

“The brains of these kids are inferior even to dogs and buffaloes. They used the word coconut shell to insult their own country where their own ancestors lived and worked for them."

It is exactly this sort of blind nationalism that is holding Thailand back on so many levels.

But good to see that there are people among the younger generation, like those students, who have actually started to think and criticize, and that they enjoyed some support for their action:

“If you want to know whether Thailand is indeed land of coconut shell, just see for yourself the comments that scold the kids 555,” tweeted @gobtaiii.

I recall an interview in the UK with some football hooligans a few years ago. They said much the same things as the numbskulls quoted above. Tsk, I don't know <shakes head> several hundred thousand years of evolution and all Thais can show for it is what you and me and everyone with a brain see every day. Oh the wife just put the Thai soapies on. Time to go out for a walk; it might be catching.

I know many Thais that hurried home after they found out how life is outside Thailand ;-)

Too much thinking required I suppose... yep, that could be right.

But not many foreigners hurried home after finding how life is like in Thailand.

I suspect you're right. To me, that says more about the quality of both groups of people and nothing at all about the country.

His critique had the response he could have hoped for. It got into the main stream media and brought out discussion through the satire on the banner. Fortunately he hit two spots. A brave young man in the current climate. Hope he passes his exams?

Lot of very deluded, strange people out there.

Sad point is, those very people are those insulting the country. Poor brainwashed idiots...

The boy might have a point but lets face it, most countries including those where most of the posters here come from is riddled with ignoramuses who have no clue whats what outside their countries! You don't get more coconut shell than an American from Idaho or Utah for example. From Utah + religion and you get yourself real block. Many videos on YouTube showing Americans, Brits,  South Africans etc failing to answer basic world geograhy questions and even failing to name their leaders! Thailand has its share of ignorant people but which country doesn't?

To my mind. it's a question of degree. there are many, many stupid people in my home country, but the average intelligence is still considerably above Thailand and considerably below Singapore and Korea.

Personally speaking, I have never in my life seen so many people who believe themselves to be superior (because that's what they've been told), and yet who are almost unbelievably dim, as I have since retiring to Thailand. For years I tried to make excuses for them, in remarkably similar ways to those I see today in these forums. Now I don't bother, I've accepted that nothing I can say or do will improve their dismal levels of comprehension among these people because they lack the motivation to improve - they don't see the need. I suppose they believe that there's no point trying to improve on what's already the best in the world. What's puzzling though, is that this superiority is not reflected at all in sport, science, education or anything else that might matter on the world stage. Have you ever seen Thais playing football? Then you'll know what I mean - or that dopey foot-volleyball they call Takraw and  'Thaiball' even though it was invented (I believe in Burma). The relentless race to the bottom.

Best to just let them get on with it. One day they'll wake up but it won't be today. In the meantime, I'm content to accept that ignorance is bliss, while not advocating it for myself.

As for the nonsense that you can't be a Thai if you criticise the country or its people, well, that's just arrant nonsense. Predictable though, given the characteristics of the population.

Although I sort of agree with you, but what about your own country?

Think they all do.  Taiwan seems to be working towards something interesting, but like Japan and Singapore, it has done very little to face its massively declining population.  There are 600K Vietnamese women there, so that helps a little.  And the economy is not great, but they are trying to become like Japan.

....Just about sums it up!

Very refreshing to see that some young students are actually aware of the problem themselves. At least The internet is giving them a glimpse of the outside world.

I just moved into an apartment for the Winter. They have changed like many Apts & hotels, to save money, from cable TV to satellite TV boxes. 300 channels but only 2 English and one of them is an infantile Thai govt propoganda channel; NBT World! The little bit of it I could stomach was about Thailand improving its English teaching in schools. They have obviously been forced into this as the only reason being given is because it is the language that is used by the 'Asean' countries in their trade negotiations etc. Nothing was said about it being important, nay vital,  as the international  2nd language of the World!

Sensitive bunch of nationalists they are here. Being unable to realistically evaluate yourself, your life or what you stand for is (amongst other things) a trait of denial.

Calling an entire nation dim based on your personal preferences shows more dimness on one's part. Saying Thais are dim because they play "takraw" means I can justifiably say Americans are dimmer because they play "American football" and "Ice hockey". You have to be pretty dim to watch and let alone play such violent sports.

I see some very bright light at the end of the tunnel and some very bright young Thai brains on display in the act.....so keep hope !!

There are stupid and smart people anywhere in the world....the problem is that often it is the less brillant who decide make choices for the future and this fact is unfortunately global.

Well, it would be if that was what I did.

But it wasn't.

Check the facts before getting all up and hard would be my advice.

When I saw the first 6 words I thought here we go another tale of sin, but no a very well put comment. Same goes here on your statement when I meet Thais on visits to UK I used to ask the same and got the No I will never go back answer, now its them asking me when are you going to come to your senses and leave, Times have changed.

Most Thais, probably the older generation still revered the military. They seem to forget that the military is there to serve the people and not the people serving the military. Ask any family for what they wish their kids to be and most will say soldier or police officers. Guess it years of brainwashing and propanganda by the military. They don’t see the damages that the military has done to the country over the last 80 years. Soon Vietnam and Philippine economy will be larger than Thailand. The students were spot on with their banner.
Unfortunately they probably do see how profitable it can be to have the right position in either of these that can be bought for the right price

Correct. Nobody and no place is perfect. We should be all be open to constructive criticism. But, sadly some believe that there is only enmity behind such criticism. Even on this site there are posters who tell others to go elsewhere if you don't like something. Absolute narrow mindedness.
