British PM May pledges to protect Europe from Russian threats

LONDON (Reuters) - British Prime Minister Theresa May said on Monday the government would maintain its commitment to protecting Europe after Brexit as she accused Russia of military aggression and meddling in elections.

The prime minister said Britain would continue to provide assistance to states that were victims of aggression.

"The UK will remain unconditionally committed to maintaining Europe's security," May said in a speech at the Guildhall in London's financial district.

"The comprehensive new economic partnership we seek will underpin our shared commitment to open economies and free societies in the face of those who seek to undermine them."

The British government is playing one its strongest cards in the Brexit negotiations by offering to put its defence and security assets at the disposal of the EU in the hope of winning concessions on future trading and economic relations.

The country has bigger defence budgets than any other EU member state and its diplomatic and intelligence services are among the most extensive in Europe.

Its government also argues it is one of the leading EU contributors to a range of security measures, such as data and evidence sharing, extradition measures and to the EU's police agency Europol.

May on Monday accused Russia of fomenting violence in eastern Ukraine, of repeatedly violating the national airspace of several European countries, and mounting a campaign of cyber attacks.

She also accused Russia of meddling in elections and hacking the Danish defence ministry, the German parliament and its state-media of planting fake stories and photo-shopped images in an attempt to undermine western institutions.

May said the government is working to reform NATO so it is better placed to counter Russian hostility and has stepped up military and economic support to Ukraine.

"We will take the necessary actions to counter Russian activity," she said.

May also said she wanted better relations with Russia if it worked to promote peace.

"Russia can, and I hope one day will, choose this different path," she said. "But for as long as Russia does not, we will act together to protect our interests and the international order on which they depend."

oh no doubt the ruskies have been up to it.......but it's fair play when the west interferes in russia

Please post a link showing where the West has hacked into the election servers in Russia and published them on the internet.  Or, where the West has taken out ads for media sites in Russia with fake information.

I'll await your response....

I like May (both the person and the month).

It's good that she is emphasizing that Brits will stand by their EU brethren - against possible incursions by former USSR operatives - whether they be digital or tanks.

Putin won't be happy.  Therefore Putin's puppet in the Oval Office won't be happy, ....but so it goes.

She does realise, does she, that the EU, despite the UK funding its own disposable assets, would seemingly expect the UK to add further funds for the benefit of the EU's own Dad's Army?

If it wasn't for the Belgians, they would now speak German in the UK.

Really?

Support from far right political factions and sections of the Belgian population allowed the German army to recruit two divisions of the Waffen-SS from Belgium and also facilitated the Nazi persecution of Belgian Jews in which nearly 25,000 were killed.

Seems these guys came to the aid of your country:

Belgium was liberated late in 1944 by Allied forces, including British, Canadian, and American armies, which also included the Brigade Piron. On September 3, 1944 the Welsh Guards liberated Brussels.[91] Just after the liberation, the inhabitants of the Marolles district held a mock funeral for Hitler.[91]

This particular line of reasoning is going nowhere, as the supposed threat, the Russians, helped a bit too - what was it, more than 20,000,000 war dead. Anyway, I think the whole thing is a straw man argument, they might muck around a bit but a serious threat to Western Europe? Really? Of course, if you're intent on expanding Western Europe's influence into Russia's backyard, the bear's going to start growling.

I do believe the nations asking to join the EU and NATO are doing so under their own free will.  Not sure how that's bothering Russia.  If they don't like it, offer up a better option.  Which apparently, they haven't.  And invading other nations and taking their territory doesn't work any more.  Thus, these nations asking to be part of NATO and the EU. LOL

Rousing speech from a leader in political trouble...although sure just a coincidence.

"The prime minister said Britain would continue to provide assistance to states that were victims of aggression." Excellent, but which states exactly would they be? Yemen?

"May said the government is working to reform NATO so it is better placed to counter Russian hostility and has stepped up military and economic support to Ukraine." So this would be the billionaire Oligarchs and those guys that march around in the SS uniforms? Excellent two very deserving groups. Perhaps could start a crowd funding for storm troopers in need?

"May also said she wanted better relations with Russia if it worked to promote peace."  Then the UK bombing Serbia, Iraq, Afghanistan and Libya and the benefits that brought them are the types of promoting peace she was referring to?

Why help Europe - the UK together with the US has rescued Europe twice in the last 100 years - why should they do it again after the pathetic way the EU is treating the UK in Britexit.

This speech by May is just a distraction, trying to turn attention away from the absolute mess she is dealing with over Brexit.

The real news is Davis announcing a so called concession in the house.  He has said that the parliament will have a final vote on the Brexit deal.  However if it is rejected then the UK will still leave the EU but without a deal at all.  Some concession!  Davis must think that the MPs are really stupid to fall for that.

Indeed.

But unlike our American cousins,  I don't think the British people will allow the presentation of Russia as the resurgent Bogeyman to divert attention from May's, her cabinet's and her party's gross inadequacies. She's becoming a pitiful character at a time when the country needs a strong visionary leader. And there just ain't one!

Davis's career has been marked by his dullness. Never the sharpest knife in the drawer. And yet, somehow selected for the hardest job a politician has faced since WW11. Maybe on the logic he's too thick to be baited by the EU team?

It's the arrogance that they think they can continue conning the British public with such crap. Concessions indeed! At some point, someone needs to be brave enough to halt this mad hatter's tea party. And for gawd sake not replace it with that Alice in Wonderland Corbyn!
