Are they the same size and in ASEAN.

They are in Asia (some in Asean), and some of them are quite comparable in terms of level of economic development. And they ALL perform better than Thailand. I did not choose to compare them, that's the IMF which did it ( for some reason, I guess). I just took off the too small countries.

You may have overlooked the fact that Thailand has foreign currency reserves in excess of USD 200 billion, far in excess of other regional countries apart from Singapore. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_foreign-exchange_reserves

.

So no, they do not ALL perform better than Thailand.

My conclusion was only valid for the indicator used: GDP growth, of course. As for the foreign currency reserves, it is structural characteristic of Thailand due to the high share of tourism in the economy.

I agree Cadbury chocolate Vietnam and Myanmar and even Laos are leaving the Thai economy behind  My wife is Thai and she is a business lady  She says she has never seen it so bad here . Empty shops, houses empty, infrastructure  falling down, Blind Freddy can see that Maybe  Blind Ronnie can not

Indeed. People are really hurting. Everybody from farmers (5 baht per kilo for rice??? 18 baht per kilo for cup rubber??) to shop keepers to market stall traders to restaurant and business owners. And everybody in between. Normal people just don't have the money these days.

Missus was at the builders merchant's couple of days ago, known them 15 years, conversation just turned to the economy, politics, and the general hatred for the current govt.

So, yeah, the headline in the OP is quite the opposite of what the average Thai man and woman on the street are feeling or seeing.

This will piss off the Thai bashers something rotten.

Numbers crunched by TAT, so must be correct.

Thai bashers, those in yellow green and brown have been doing that for a few years now.

OK lets debate.  What countries to compare?  I suggest Vietnam, Laos, Burma, Cambodia, Philippines and Indonesia based on geographic proximity and equal trade opportunities?  Singapore is not in because it is a city not a country.  If you want to compare cities Bangkok vs Singapore might be valid.

First I suggest agreeing on countries to compare and then on what basis to compare.

Actually it should start with deciding which criteria to choose in order to define the panel. To have a proper debate on this issue would be very time consuming.

That's why the figures from the IMF I showed are interesting. As all Asian developping countries (as selected by the IMF) perform significantly better than Thailand on GDP growth, it is unecessary to spend time to choose among them.

Other indicators may be useful (debt, investissement, etc...), but to be frank, I have no time to collect them. Feel free to do it, I will be happy to comment them.
