PM to board navy ship for International Fleet Review 2017 procession

CHONBURI, 20TH November 2017 (NNT) – The Prime Minister is to board HTMS Talang to take part in the International Fleet Review 2017, which was officially opened yesterday in Chonburi province as part of celebrations to mark the 50th anniversary of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Gen Prawit Wongsuwan chaired the opening ceremony of the International Fleet Review 2017, remarking that the event underlined the Royal Thai Navy’s readiness to work with its counterparts in ASEAN along with the bloc’s allies, as well as the Ministry of Defense’s capability to help ensure regional security.

Royal Thai Navy Commander Admiral Naris Pratumsuwan, alongside the Governor of Chonburi province and the mayor of Pattaya City, oversaw a parade in Pattaya to launch the review. The opening ceremony included a weapons display by cadets of the Naval Ratings' School and a procession celebrating the 50th anniversary of the founding of ASEAN.

A 12 man parachuting demonstration, in which jumpers displayed flags of the 10 ASEAN nations, the ASEAN flag and the flag of the Royal Thai Navy, preceded the activities of the review, which yesterday included a demonstration of rescues on the open water and cooperation between the navy, government agencies and the private sector.

The colorful activities attracted the interest of tourists, many of whom traveled to Pattaya expressly to view the event and braved rains to see the events unfold.

Today, 40 warships from 18 countries will conduct a parade at sea with Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-ocha and his deputy Gen Prawit onboard HTMS Talang. The procession will showcase the capabilities of the participating nations as well as the strength of their alliance.

Both of them on one boat? Quick, give me the hot line to the skipper of that destroyer, next but one behind the Talang . . . anyone know the Chinese for DIRECT HIT and you'll win the parade?

There is certainly no better way to showcase Pattaya's poor drainage system to the world than to have an international parade march through a foot of overflowing sewage and floating street garbage along beach road. I'm sure everyone was impressed.

There was no 'parade at sea' and the whole hyped thing was quite a disappointment, in my opinion.  I think from the 'parade at sea' description most people were expecting to see a parade of the ships of the various nations.  Instead, the ships never moved and, instead, the PM boarded a ship at Bali Hai Pier and that ship went out and did a circuit around the anchored ships.  Big whoop.  Let us not mention the fiasco of a parade yesterday and the very underwhelming fireworks display last evening---set off nowhere near Bali Hai Pier, the main staging area and focal point.
