Long long time ago, I entered with a Non-O, which was extended yearly (Marriage).

My last extension expired, and I have since re-entered with a new VISA (F).

I'm going now for an extension of stay (Stay Permit), and apparently I may be asked to provide a letter to immigration to indicate that I request to cancel my initial Non-O ...

This does not make any sense to me, as well as to the staff in charge of assisting me ... but they (the staff) have had to do this for another person.

Why would immigration request a letter to cancel an expired VISA or Extension of Stay???

Anyone with similar experience?

You apparently only left the country without a re-entry permit which voided your extension of stay. But that did not cancel it.

They want the extension formally canceled by it being requested so they can put a canceled stamp on it. But I am not sure it will be asked for if your were on an extension based upon marriage.

People with extensions based upon working or teaching are having that requested since the extension ends when the job ends.
