ETatBKK Posted November 29, 2017 Posted November 29, 2017 hi there I am not good on networking, need your ideas on this really simple question ! I have a True ZTE GPON optical router in the storeroom and it hardwired to a fast Linksys EA6500 wifi router in the living room. now I need to connect x2 WD NAS to the network. question 1 - what would be the pos and cons if I connect these NAS into the ZTE in the store room ? question 2 - any performance issue, any network complication ? thanks for your ideas ! cheers
clokwise Posted November 30, 2017 Posted November 30, 2017 Generally I'd recommend attaching the NAS at the WiFi router - as typically that will give you greater security via NAT, and it will be one hop closer to your wifi clients. Plus if you need to reset your ZTE it won't take down the NAS with it. If your NAS has fans you should ensure it is not stored in an area where it will collect dust or overheat. Also a UPS on both routers and especially the NAS is highly recommended in Thailand.
ETatBKK Posted November 30, 2017 Author Posted November 30, 2017 thanks clokwise 'one hop closer to your client' - certainly 'reset the ZTE it won't take down the NAS with it' - brilliant ! I noticed that I have 2 LANs with me : - primary TRUE router : ZTE ZXHN F668, on its own on 192.168.1.x, wifi disabled and only Linksys on LAN1 - secondary router : Linksys EA6500 on 10.77.x.x, all devices wired or wifi, and x2 WD MyCloud now someone wants to hide the NAS from the living room ! is it that bad to connect NAS to the primary router ? what will be affected ? do I need to re-config these two routers ? thanks . . .

No, but do check the security level on the ZTE. True, if you reboot the ZTE then your NAS will go down. But for less than a minute I guess. The router will be back up before the internet connection.

Better to implement user/directory level security on the NAS than simply try to hide it. What you just described is a double NAT, or, a NAT within a NAT. You may find some applications will have trouble with that setup. Regardless of where you attach your NAS, a better option is to configure your ZTE to be a DHCP server, and set your Linksys to be in bridge mode, then everything, NAS, Linksys, WiFi clients, etc, will be in the 192.168.1.x IP range.
maxpower Posted November 30, 2017 Posted November 30, 2017 I put my NAS in a cupboard so that noone can find it.
ETatBKK Posted December 1, 2017 Author Posted December 1, 2017 thanks guys I guess my first move : cascading ( LAN-LAN ) the Linksys router with the ZTE router, so I get one IP zone of 192.168.x.x and it allows me to plug in two NAS with more flexibility. currently the Linksys and the NAS are sitting behind the APC ups. yeah, just setup another APC at the ZTE location with two NAS. thanks, clockwise. physically it doesn't matter where the NAS located, as long not too hot not too dusty. I don't have an internet enabled cupboard yet; thanks maxpower :-) cheers
