CHIANG RAI, 30th November 2017 (NNT) – Chiang Rai has geared up to host the 5th Amazing 10 Tribes of Maesai event this December 8 to 12.

Mae Sai District Chief, Somsak Kanakam and Mae Sai Sub-District Mayor, Sailayon Srisamut today joined President of the Thai-Myanmar Cultural and Economic Association Pakaimas Viera in announcing the coming 5th Amazing 10 Tribes of Maesai event. The exhibition will showcase the cultures, traditions, clothing, food and lifestyles of ethnic groups that exist around Chiang Rai province, which include Akha, Lu and Shan people.

The event is to begin with a parade displaying the different clothing of the 10 tribes and include traditional activities such as Khan Tok dinners. Highlights of the happening will include over 100 OTOP food vendors representing all four regions of the country and demonstrations of local wisdom, medicine and handicrafts as practiced by the tribes.

Somsak remarked that the event will underline Thailand’s appreciation of its ethnic groups and help them to preserve their cultures and traditions. It will also boost tourism to Chiang Rai and enhance ties with Thailand and its neighbor Myanmar.

Entry will be free throughout the event, to be open 10AM to 10PM daily this December 8th to 12th.

Sounds like a fun event.

On a side note:  I don't want to sound cynical, but at prior events like this, the sound systems have been too loud.  I've had to walk out of events in Tachilek and Chiang Rai, when the sound systems (always turned up to full) make my ears hurt.  If anyone is in contact with the organizers, tell them to please not make it loud.  Here's a suggestion:  If you must make things very loud, turn the speaker cabinets toward one section of the fair.  That way, people who want excrutiatingly-loud sounds can be in that loud section, and those who want to enjoy themselves can conjegate in the less-excruciatingly-loud areas.

Oh, and tell organizers to discourage dropping trash everywhere.  A jogging event in Bkk was canceled today, because cops didn't want to pick up tons of garbage that festive-goes dropped at prior similar events.   Have you ever been to a Thai fairgrounds after a celebration?   If you have, you see trash everywhere - and if there's any wind, it spreads for hundreds of meters.

beautiful pic in the OP.  After 19 years residing here (and first visiting this region 34 yrs ago), my fave folks are the hill tribers.  Maybe because I'm an old hippie, I don't know, but I can relate to them, and feel more comfortable with them, than regular Thai folks.  They're more natural, more down to earth.  They don't mind getting a bit of dirt under their fingernails or a bit of mud on their shoes.

Thais are encumbered with always doing what they're taught they should do, rather than doing what they naturally want to do.  I equate Thais with Philippine or Mexican Catholics:  every utterance, every movement, is taught to them - as being either proper or improper.  You can ask a question to 20 Thais and you'll likely get a similar answer from each.  Where's the spontinaity (sp)?  Where's the creativeness or the courage to buck the trends?    Cookie cutter comes to mind.   Sorry for the rant.   I'm sure many posters reading this will adamantly take issue.  Go for it.

Not on my watch.

This is a thread about a Hills Tribe event at Mae Sai, does anyone have a map of it's location?
It's held at the park kitty corner to the 711/PT station at the lights when you come into town from the south. You can't miss it, there will be a huge amount of parked vehicles on the road.

I love the notice they give. 7 days!

But, someone might help me here. I am in Chiang Rai Jan 7th. and 8th. I recall another year when I was up there that the Lahu had a festival 'out the back' of Chiang Rai. Can't remember the date and it might have been closer to New Year as the Lahu are Christians (not, thank goodness, that there was any Christian stuff done - just dancing and music and everyone in their traditional costume.) Does anyone know of any other traditional Lahu, Hmong, Akha, Lisu or Karen festivals over those two days and if so, where?
