Sihanoukville slashes trash collection cost

Featured Replies

Sihanoukville residents are benefiting from cheaper rubbish collections after Preah Sihanouk province changed the price of waste disposal services amid complaints it was too expensive. The company Cintri pulled out of collecting trash in Sihanoukville in September, citing unsustainable losses.

Now the firm KSWM is providing the service instead. Preah Sihanouk Governor Y Sokleng announced the new pricing structure on Monday and said it had been agreed on by the authorities, residents and the company.

“Some residents disagreed with the previous price, but all have agreed on the new price,” he said. Collections from private homes will now cost between 4,000 and 10,000 riel ($1-$2.50) per month, while businesses will pay from 12,000 to 40,000 riel ($3-$10).

ThaiVisa, c'est aussi en français

ThaiVisa, it's also in French

I traveled from Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville about five years ago. The amount of trash in the streets was appalling! This can only do good for Cambodia.

Say what you will about Thailand, they have a decent handle (generally speaking) about managing waste disposal. Yes, nay-sayers can (and probably will) bring up examples of isolated cases where garbage is piling up, but  the roads between Bangkok and Jomtien are basically garbage-free compared to Cambodia.

Thais manage their waste disposal by burning it. Hiding it in the air doesn't work

sihanoukville and cambodia in general, is absolutely filthy---it amazes me, they have a beautiful beach---set up restaurants amongst the rubbish---thailand has nothing on cambodia for filth...
