But you implied that it's unacceptable for Thailand's culture, despite the country's long history of culturally accepted nudity.  The implication is that they ought to go somewhere else where such antics are acceptable.  Hence my question.

This is the last time I will ask but do you honestly not understand the difference between historic cultural nudity and these guys posting photos of their toushes?

It was the cultural norm in many indigenous groups to be minimally clad but that has no comparison whatsoever to the staged stunts of these two guys.

In fact, if they lived back then then the motivation for these stunts would not have existed. It is exactly for the fact their behavior is “naughty” (in a gay way) that they do it and that they had internet followers.

That's good because I was getting sick of reading it.  You can pick apart differences in any two events.  That was then, this is now.  OK, there's a difference.  It's not an important difference especially when people use the "culture of Thailand" argument as a defense.  I can predict what you're going to say: That's different! Times change! That was then and this is now! Irony irony! By the way are you accusing me of dramatic or situational irony?

Weak.

You know what's weak?  A one-word rebuttal.  Now that's weak.  I called you on your BS that no straight people would ever do such a thing.  When I pointed out that straight people in fact DO such a thing, and it has become such a popular event that trains actually slow down for it, your started singing your favorite "that's different!" tune again.  You should make that your theme song.

When the personal attacks start then its a good indication you are losing.

Don’t worry...once you have been here awhile you will learn not to take it personally.

I'm not unaware why these people were doing this - to get a rise out of folks.  The same reason the Amtrak trains get mooned every year.  Pure shock value.  I'm not suggesting that these people were claiming to be part of Thailand's culture or doing any sort of valuable performance art.

So they are free to leave the LOS.

Heroes to some; villans to others.

The Don had a word with Tilly

Tilly had a word with Junta vice PM.

Vice PM had a word with  Ch-o-ch.

Ch-o-ch had a word with the court clerk.

Court Clerk had a word with Miss Pinky.

Miss Pinky had a word with the Justices.

Thanks Miss Pinky! At least you can see the humour. Pass it on; Thailand needs some!

Heroes to almost nobody.

That seems to be a lie people are promoting.

It was a stupid thing they did.

There were signs in English demanding modesty in dress.

They ignored them.

Certainly a fine was totally deserved.

But years in prison that they were threatened with ... for showing butts, totally absurd.

And some respect.

If they want to do things like this in a gay enclave that's fine, but they need to respect that temples are not gay enclaves and there are folks there teaching their children to respect certain things and that definitely doesn't include naked butts in a temple compound.

GLBT folks want people to respect them (fine), so they also need to respect the values etc., of other groups in society. Two way street.

They do not represent gay people.

That's another lie anti-gay people are promoting.

They are two individuals, a gay couple, that did something stupid and wrong.

If they were straight, people wouldn't even consider that what they did had anything to with straight people in general.

Yes they are known back home and DECENT people, gay or straight, didn't think it was right for them to rot in prison for the level of their offense here,

And this is what the US gay community who has thrown their support for these two have failed to appreciate.

We are responsible for the communities we represent when we travel and these two guys represent the US gay community.

Their behavior reflects poorly not only on themselves but on the larger group they represent so a negative backlash against the larger community is an unfortunate unintended consequence.

That is why there should have been far fewer rally cries of support and far more admonishments from their followers.

They weren't doing it to get a rise out of people- they were doing this because they are uncouth; selfish; lack any sensitivity to others and are generally lacking in basic social skills.

It is what it is-  they got what they deserve and are lucky it was Thailand or else they may well have been placed on a sex offender list and have to register and report to police yearly. It's called indecent exposure.  Notice the key word is indecent!!!!

its just very disrespectful.

The can go to nude beaches instead.

Fans who following these punks on social media are sickos.

If people want to follow them, that's up to them.

But I can assure you that people that do follow them and have been amused by their iconic "butt tourism" photos done in different countries are probably entertained by the concept. As they really aren't particularly "hot" or model types (sorry guys if you read this) and the photos aren't in the slightest bit pornographic, there is no way it's for sexual stimulation.
Again, they are certainly NOT heroes, and they certainly have no good excuse for not paying attention to the clear signs about modest dress at the wats here in Thailand.

But jail not deserved either.

Now let's have a conversation on the behavior of Buhdist monks, their morality and adherence to the ways of the Buhda.

Drugs, sex with underage girls and boys, rampant greed and consumerism, act's of violence and lawlessness of all sorts. Sigh!

Exactly, right back at the religous nutters :D

If you read the article from the magazine  and the attached comments you can see many gay people were very critical of them.

i think the  comments relating to supporting them from the editor were related to people showing some emotional support and compassion about their situation being unjustly locked up. That’s my take anyhow rightly or wrongly.

I don't think they represent gay people at large any more than a straight person who does something adverse represents all straights.

I do not think a jail sentence would serve any purpose but frankly, I am surprised that the gay community at large in the US did not condemn their actions as abhorrent. These 2 people are trying to present this as a situation where the Thai authorities came after them because of their lifestyle which is ludicrous as Thailand is one of the most liberal countries in the World regarding LGBT issues .

I would have some respect for the 2 if they simply admitted they were wrong; apologized profusely; and took down their social media site and deleted the  offending pictures.

If they did pictures in other countries without problems or people freaking out, why should they remove those pictures? Obviously what they did here was a big problem. But that's not universal. In their experience, Thailand is much more the exception than the rule. They had a false impression of how liberal Thailand is. Now they know. People that wish they would do this in a strict Muslim country and then maybe get beheaded ... dudes, they may be silly and stupid, but no way are they THAT stupid.

OK.

I would say your view on this carries some weight.

Unfortunately for the US gay community, they are identified by most every news outlet as a “gay couple”.

Where I grew up we were always instilled with the idea that we represented something larger than just ourselves...whether it was our family, our school, our church, our community, etc..

Apparently these two never received such a lesson.

Out of respect for you and others here on TVF, any gay bashing posts should be reported.

...not to mention their contempt for Thailand, it's culture and it's authorities.

So this isn't a problem once they're out of here. I didn't hear whether they would be banned for life here. That sounded reasonable to me but even if not banned, I seriously doubt they'll ever be back!
