BANGKOK, 11th December 2017 (NNT) – Miss Thailand Universe 2017 Maria Poonlertlarp, who made it into the top 5 at this year’s Miss Universe Pageant has arrived back in Thailand, receiving a bouquet and a message of congratulations from Her Royal Highness Princess Sirivannavari Nariratana.

The beauty queen arrived back in Bangkok last night at 11:35PM and was received by ML Songlak Sawasdiwat, representing HRH Princess Sirivannavari Nariratana, before meeting her waiting fans and family.

Upon arrival, Maria expressed her gratitude to all those who cheered her on and voted for her during the competition. She said she was proud to have represented Thailand at the 2017 Miss Universe contest and that she had competed to benefit the image of the Kingdom.

While she didn't take the crown at the 66th Miss Universe, Maria became a celebrity among the Thai people in her run up to the competion against beauties from 92 other countries and she ultimately finished in the top 5. Her popularity saw celebrities and noted individuals in Thailand voicing their support for her, and her first video from the competition to be posted online received an astonishing 1 million views in only 14 hours, the fastest and highest view count among any of the contestants.

Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-ocha has lauded Maria for her ability to draw focus towards Thailand. She is scheduled to meet with the PM tomorrow at 8:30AM at Santi Maitri Building of Government House.

Miss Universe beauty back home more socially aware

By The Nation

Miss Universe Thailand Maria Poonlertlarp has returned home from Las Vegas after finishing in the final five in the global competition and she’s vowing to become active in a social movement.

Fans cheered Maria on her arrival at Suvarnabhumi International Airport on Sunday night.

The beauty queen’s success in the Miss Universe pageant was somewhat tainted by controversy over her answer to a “skill-testing question” posed during the telecast. Her confusing response was widely blamed for her failure to win the crown.

Maria was asked: “What do you think has been the most important social movement of your generation, and why?”

Her reply: “I think the most important social movement so far is our ageing population, though the most important movement of our time is our youth. Our youth are our future. We must invest in our young people because they are the ones that will look after the Earth and the elderly.”

Back in Thailand, Maria admitted the question had taken her by surprise.

“Our country still lacks adequate social movements,” she said, but now she wants to try and change that. “I intend to do more to bring public attention to social movements.”

For now, Maria plans to encourage young people to avoid premature pregnancy.

On Tuesday, Maria is to meet Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha.

Doing that should work for most young people...

I think I've missed it, can she speak Thai or only Swedish?

Jesus! What would this country do if they won the world cup?
