Maria Poonlertlarp, who finished as a top 5 finalist in the Miss Universe 2017 beauty pageant, has accepted Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha’s invitation to be the country’s tourism ambassador.

Ms Maria said this after a meeting with Gen Prayut at Government House on Tuesday (Dec 12).

The Swedish-Thai beauty said she felt it a great honour being given the opportunity to meet the prime minister.

She said the prime minister congratulated her for finishing as one of the top five finalists in the 2017 Miss Universe beauty pageant in the United States. Gen Prayut advised her to maintain the quality of being Thai and do everything honestly in return for her parents.

Miss Universe Thailand accepts Prayut’s offer of job as government spokesperson to ‘promote Thainess’

Thailand Maria Poonlertlarp poses as a woman tries to take selfie shots with her at Government House |yesterday. In Maria’s left hand is a Suk Jai doll, the mascot of the Tourism Authority of Thailand.

MISS UNIVERSE Thailand Maria Poonlertparp yesterday visited Government House to meet Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha after finishing in the final five in the Miss Universe 2017 contest late last month.

As a gift for the Thai beauty pageant winner, Prayut offered her a job with the government spokesperson team to promote tourism.

As an ambassador of goodwill, Maria immediately accepted the offer. “I wish to promote Thainess for the international community to see and understand,” she said, flashing a smile.

Prayut also said Maria, who is of mixed Thai and Swedish derivation, could set an example of a Thai person speaking English with a “sophisticated accent”.

“We’re fixing the Thai education system to make Thai people speak English with a good accent,” he said.

Maria’s trip to Government House with her mother was one of her earliest agenda items since returning to Thailand on Sunday night from a one-week break after the competition in Las Vegas. Although not claiming the crown, the 25-year-old achieved the best showing for Thailand since Porntip Nakhirunkanok Simon, who won the Miss Universe contest in 1988.

Maria is no stranger to the spotlight, as the 1.8-metre-tall model began her career when she was 13, has recorded singles and performed some acting roles. She also holds a master’s degree in marketing from the Stockholm Business School in Sweden.

She not only won the hearts of Thai people but also triggered a debate about the term “social movement”, which she was asked about during Miss Universe’s question-and-answer session.

On stage, she stumbled in her answer, confusing demographic shifts in society with social advocacy, which drew criticism from some commentators. Off stage, however, she continues her advocacy against teenage pregnancy and yesterday gave promotional materials to Prayut.

The premier also displayed his particular brand of humour as he met the model, who was said to be “very glad, excited and honoured” to meet him in person.

“No matter what rank you gained, what’s done is done. Thai people support you,” Prayut said. “In my opinion, Maria is certainly more beautiful and taller than them but a bit too skinny. She should work out more.”

Might be better to fix it to encourage questioning, independent thought and an ability to problem solve.

Confuses one thing for another?

She’ll make a perfect tourism ambassador then.

Whatever happened to work out Friday (or whatever day of the week it was) for govt ministers, officials and civil servants, those articles (especially the pictures) were hilarious.

Her proven ability not to mention any of Thailand's recent uprisings make her very well qualified not to embarrass them.

The problem being that when people start to do that, they get an attitude adjustment.

How much elocution is involved in speaking Thai ?   Just hope he means "pronunciation" instead of "accent".  A rather mind numbing, silly statement.

Prayut also said Maria, who is of mixed Thai and Swedish derivation, could set an example of a Thai person speaking English with a “sophisticated accent”

Did he say that?

what a load of them things between my legs, You want to learn English employ an English person then, but the English know not to get involved here, so income the other 3rd world countries who cannot even hold a conversation with a Brit. "sophisticated accent" Oh my, he would not know one if he heard one. Living in dreamworld.

Ah...that lovely Swedish accent.

Just for a bit of fun..
"The Dove"

It's somewhat unfortunate that her name Maria translated in Thai means 'doglick'.

There once was another Maria who actually became famous for it.

I hope it is a highly paid position. There seems to be a lot of money to be made

in government positions.

You mean, into a Prince

Sorry, lady, photo session finished.... Business as usual for uncle Tuu. He's doing it his way or the high way......

Posting this of Maria Lynn Ehren (her facebook/wikepedia names) as it provides the best preview of the Thai Air Force Museum that you are likely to see (in a music vid anyway):

Did you know?:

Marias favourite philosophers are Hume, Kant and Kierkegaard.
