BANGKOK, 14 December 2017 (NNT) – The Deputy Prime Minister has dismissed claims the government is considering altering the political party law to allow them to get back into action, saying the idea was only floated in addition to an order from the National Council of Peace and Order (NCPO).

Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu Kreau-ngam acknowledged that amending the political party act is one way to unlock Thailand’s political parties, apart from the NCPO lifting its ban on their activities, but noted that the NCPO is believed to have a plan to ensure that political parties will be able to operate effectively.

Meanwhile, a forum convened by the political reform committee headed by Anek Laothammatas and attended by various experts found that most concerns at this time are to do with the Election Commission (EC) and whether or not its latest roster can remain neutral.

EC member Somchai Suthiyakorn addressed the worries, saying that democracy is based on strong rules, adherence to such rules and free elections, urging the return of political parties to full acceptance, and citizens to report any suspicious activity by politicians. He also mentioned that the process for selecting senators must be properly plotted to ensure capable individuals are chosen.

Bhumjaithai party member Supachai Jaisamutr, speaking at the forum, said he was worried that the new EC panel would not be neutral and that a delay in allowing political parties to act could result in questioning of the general election.

Founder of the People’s Reform Party Paiboon Nititawan stated that the nation’s political plan must be seen as a trustworthy election is the heart of democracy.

Director of King Prajadhipok Institute’s Office for Peace and Governance, Gen Ekkachai Srivilas said he wants to see a clearer plan for local level elections so that they may serve as a foundation for national polls.
