Changing 2 year Temporary Licence to a 5 year Licence.

Featured Replies

I got my 2 year temporary Thai licence 15/01/16 and I am hoping that someone can answer the following questions :-

1) What is the earliest date I can apply to renew it to a 5 year licence.

2) Do I require a Certificate of Residence.

3) Do I require a medical certificate of fitness to drive.

Any advice and information is much appreciated. Thanking you all in advance.

Usually in the last month of old one.

Med cert' and res' cert or yellow book and passport especially if you have a new passport from two years ago.

Some places accept pink ID if you have one.

What area are you in? someone from that area will post.

There is a sort of unofficial time period from about a month before until a month after expiry. Your new licence will have a start date that is the same as the start date of your first.

My licence I renewed last year has the dates 1999 to 2022.

You can ask before the last month but not sure what they will say.

I seem to remember someone saying before, that you have to wait until it's actually expired before applying for the new one. If you apply before, they give you another 1-2 year licence. Not sure if this is still the case.

Hello,

I recenty completed the 2-year to 5-year conversion in Udon Thani for both car and motorbike.

They required

1. 2 year temporary  Drivers license(s)

2. Passport copies (2) *one for each license

3. Original Passport

4. Certificate of Residence (2) *one for each license

After submitting the documents, it took maybe 15 minutes to process, then a few minutes to have my picture taken and the new cards printed.  I think it was around 200baht per license

The Certificates of Residence (2ea) were produced by Udon Thani Immigration and took maybe 15 minutes total. Each office will have their own requirements, I recommend contacting your local Immigration office to determine what documentation you will need. There was a 500baht service fee for instant service (much cheaper than a trip to the embassy) and the staff were excellent.

As with all submissions to a government entity have your documents in order prior to arriving and be prepared for the uexpected with addtional copies, or supporting documentation.

Cheers!
