Woman who swallowed over 1kg of cocaine held at Phuket airport

 

BANGKOK: A 27-year-old woman from the Ivory Coast has been arrested on the Thai island of Phuket after an airport X-ray found more than one kilogramme of cocaine in her stomach wrapped in scores of small packets.

 

The woman was stopped by officials late Wednesday night at Phuket's international airport after landing on a flight from Doha.

 

An X-ray revealed more than 60 small packages in her stomach, filled with 1.2 kilogrammes (2.6 pounds) of cocaine, according to Sirinya Sitdhichai, secretary-general of Thailand's Office of Narcotics Control Board.

What a pity, just 27 yrs old and she will now rot in a Thai jail for 15-20 years. Just how foolish can a person be ? She would have stuck out like a sore thumb coming alone as a tourist from an impoverished country to a place like Phuket.

Always remember the first time I came to Thailand - early 2000's. Big neon sign at the airport 'Drug smuggling can carry the death penalty'. Shame they do not enforce it.

Yes, surely. So desperate that life in a Thai prison would have been more appealing to her than the misery back home.

Cocaine is produced from the Coca plant, they dont grow that in the US, it would take a large area that would be easily spotted. The Coca plant is indigenous to South America.

do you really think she thought about that ? she thought she was not going to get caught. if everyone that committed a crime thought they were going to get caught there would be NO crimes committed

No, but there are direct flights from Rio de Janeiro to Luanda, Angola, overland to Abidjan, then direct flt to Paris or Doha, been a large smuggling route for 20 years.  Especially when the Military controls the airport in Luanda  -  Ka Ching

Well, at 46% of the population living under the poverty line in 2015, and I doubt it has got much better since then, so, yes, I would say it's "impoverished."
