Noppadol denies Thaksin plans to buy TV station in Singapore

BANGKOK: -- Noppadol Pattama, legal adviser of former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, denied Wednesday that his boss had planned to buy a TV station in Singapore.

Wonder if the tv station was actually the entity that backed away from the deal when they realized they didn't want to end up with a 100 Billion Baht debt like the last tv station that Thaksin owned did.

This is exactly the kind of "news" that junta warned the media about. Thaksin would try get on air under any pretext. He'd make up a story so that he can emphatically deny it.

But the Nation would never propagate a rumor that originates at the water cooler would it. Especially one that served to imply that Takky was planning to launch a media blitz against their beloved junta from outside the borders. I really doubt that the Nation is so stupid as to write a single line that they think could in any sense at all benefit Taksin. Do you honestly believe that the Nation is Noppy's media tool and the poor beleagured journos there, with their dedication to fair and objective news coverage are being played for suckers? The Nation is a player in this game. An important player. And what ever else they may be, their journos are not stooges- or more precisely- not stooges of the Taksin crowd.

The question here that may answer both of you is did Noppadol Patthama (post #4) volunteer the information or did they ask him for it? Know that and you will know the answer.

If they didn't report Noppadol's statement you'd accuse them of bending to dicatorship.

No I wouldn't. First because I don't expect (good) newspapers to even discuss rumors until the rumor itself becomes newsworthy- ie, not its content but its existance. (a rumor that a space ship landed down the street is not newsworthy- the evacuation of that neighborhood on the basis of that rumor is newsworthy.) Second- I personally had never heard the suggestion in the first place. The published rebuttal to the rumor served only to broadcast the rumor. I think that makes sense- doesn't it?

The Nation Multimedia Group publishes the following:

The Nation - An English-language daily with circulation in the 60,000-80,000 range.

Nation Junior Magazine - A weekly English-language, youth-targeted publication.

Nation Weekend - A weekly Thai-language news magazine. According to FIPP, circulation in 2003-2004 was 150,000.

Kom Chad Luek (Sharp, Clear, In-Depth) - A mass-circulation, Thai-language daily, with circulation in the 500,000-600,000 range. It was launched in 2001.

Krungthep Turakij (Bangkok Business News) - A daily Thai-language business newspaper with circulation in the 80,000-100,000 range. This paper is also popular with Thai intellectuals.

I'd be very surprised if the editorial bias was less than consistant among these publications. Any paper 'popular with intellectuals' in Thailand- any paper widely read by the foreign business community in Thailand -and any paper with a readership of half a million in Thailand is a player. Put them together and you've got a fairly big player. No?

We have a direct quote of only The Nation's newspaper article. If we aren't supplied with quotes from the Nation Junior Magazine, Nation Weekend, Kom Chad Luek, or Krungthep Turakij's articles, we can only speculate on what they said about the issue or even if any articles exist at all. I guess until then, we are left with the 60,000-80,000 figure. :D
