What is the procedure?

The purpose of the balloon is to give you a feeling of fullness, which naturally makes you eat less and lose weight. Gastric balloons are inserted under sedation which takes 15- 30 minutes. It is a relatively minor procedure. Undergoing Gastric Balloon procedure is a day surgery, but we require our patient to stay for at least 1-2 days to make sure that the patient does not have any complications after insertion of the balloon.

During the procedure a soft adjustable balloon is inserted into the stomach through the mouth, using an endoscope (thin, flexible telescope). Saline-filled gastric balloon that rests in the stomach cavity and decreases the appetite by occupying approximately one third of the stomach volume.

Spatz 3 adjustable balloon is a tool which helps weight loss and will provide the best result if associated with proper diet and exercise.

Benefits of the procedure

Weight loss comes in different ways. Some undergo a certain operation, take weight loss medications or go on extreme diet. One benefit of Spatz 3 adjustable balloon is that, it is a non-surgical approach without the need of medication to lose weight. Weight loss also contributes to improvements in obesity-related conditions such as diabetes, hypertension and other medical conditions. Insertion of Gastric balloon does not require any incisions.

Risks of the procedure

In general, gastric balloon is a very safe procedure. However as with any procedure there are risks involved.

What is required prior to surgery?

Prior to getting Gastric Balloon approved and scheduled, we require our patient to schedule an appointment with our Multi-Disciplinary Team, our team are consist of Gastroenterologist, Dietician or Endocrinologist and Intensive Care Anaesthetist. The dietician will educate about the diet changes that will be needed after the surgery. The Anaesthetist will be the one to monitor all major body functions throughout the procedures of inserting and extracting the balloon.

Two weeks prior the procedure Physician will advise the patient to take Antacids. Antacids neutralizes the gastric acid. The decision to insert the balloon must be taken after discussion and consultation with the multi-disciplinary team.

How much weight will I lose with gastric balloon?

The balloon makes it possible to lose between 10 kilograms and 25 kilograms in 1 year. It is also important for the patient to understand that the gastric balloon is a tool to aid weight loss and will provide the best result if associated with proper diet, exercise and a behavior modification program. The amount of weight you lose and maintain will depend on how closely you follow your diet and adopt long-term lifestyle changes.

After the insertion of Gastric Balloon

After the balloon is inserted, the stomach will have the adaptation of the presence of the newly inserted balloon. At this time patient will likely to experience discomfort, crampy abdominal, nausea or dry reaching and significant fullness or bloating in the upper abdomen.

Our Physicians will recommend medications to relieve the symptoms. Antacids is recommended and must be taken continuously for 1 year. Also, there will be a diet that needs to be followed during this period. Consultation for follow-up must be done every 4-6 weeks.

FAQ’S

What happens if the balloon leaks?

Specialist will inject a blue colored saline inside the balloon. If the balloon leaks, you will notice that your urine will be blue. If this happens, you must inform the doctor immediately. He could remove the balloon by endoscopic route (same on how it was inserted). However, if you were not able to inform the Specialist immediately, there is a risk that the completely deflated balloon will migrate into the digestive tract and could create an intestinal obstruction.

How is the Intra-Gastric Balloon removed?

The Balloon is removed in the same way it was introduced. Removal of the balloon takes about 20-30 minutes another anesthesia.

How long is the recovery after the insertion of the balloon?

As mentioned above we require our patients who will undergo the procedure to at least stay for 2 days. We will be monitoring their condition after inserting the balloon and make sure that there is no complications after the procedure.

Can I eat normally with the balloon?

There will be a diet that needs to be followed. Your diet will be normal several days after the insertion of the balloon. You will not be able to eat as much as you want unlike before. You will immediately feel full after eating a small amount of food. Sweet and fatty foods may cause nauseousness.

What are the difference of Gastric balloon in other weight loss programs/procedures?

In Gastric Balloon you can expect to lose more weight. The balloon will produce a feeling of satiety, this will give you more control on your diet.

What are the things I should avoid after balloon insertion?

You should avoid Carbonated drinks, very strong tea and coffee. It is also advised not to eat evening meal too late and to wait for at least two hours before going to bed. Smoking on an empty stomach needs to be avoided.

When it comes to activity, It is strictly forbidden to go on scuba diving or fly in an unpressurized aircraft. The practice of combat and extreme sports is not advised in any circumstances.

Dear Hupaponics and all interested.

I first reply on last remark. Second I inform you if have overweight by obesitas some tips out from personal experience.

July 8, 2015 127 kg at 1.75 meters and now in January 2018, 75.5 kg at same lenght.

First ALL overweight is not simple to be reduced by eating less or doing more excercise.

New insight in medics are that Obesitas not only is being caught by just eating till dead. Of course it is true that the more you eat the more you gain weight. BUT when you eat less your body cn jump insurvival mode and save everything and get nutricion even from as we call it the wind.

Medical reasons can be:

Genetic disorder, Mental and Psychological reasons, Stomach flora and colon flora, bacterial issues.

My history is since at about 1990 I did gainweight and also did try many diets and being active. Diets and food levels even checked in closed environment  in a sanatorium,

Gained weight up to July 2015 with previous result 127 kg at 1.75. Target weight for me at about 80 to 85 kg at that time. Lowest and minimum at 75 kg.

At about 2004 I started to consult specialists on stomach reduction via surgery in NL (the Netherlands). Many examinations and procedures later I got tired and went in March 2015 for help to a Belgium university hospital.

In the total examination and consulting period also a genetic test was done. The waiting for result is 3 to 3 months.

I have a genetic defect. Told to me on July 8, 2015

Final result I was operated on a gastric bypass on July 9, 2015. Result October 22, 2015 I was 85 kg. March 2016 I was 74.0 kg but not felt good and felt tired too soon.

Now I  balancing between 76.7 and 74,7. I can feel when I get too low in weight. That time i start to eat sweets (a lot). chocolate and softdrinks to get sugar up.

I am eating 6 to 8 times a day as much as I can (at about 250 - 300 cc per time) but not gain weight anymore. Do I eat healthy? According my wife NOT hmmm no detailing in this.

This is my story.

STOMACH SIZE REDUCTION{

But on stomach size reduction my comments. I am not a doctor but with bachelor degrees in mechanical, precision, applied sience and management. 32 years of working experience in medical equipment, I think I can make statements. Also as I did work and live in the BENELUX, GERMANY and German speaking countries for the most part of my life.

There are medical seen three known ways to do surgery on stomach resizing.

1. A band or sleeve. This is the oldest form and in the Benelux and Germany used at maybe 5% of all cases.

Too many rework after placing due to movement of the band or sleeve,  infections risks and others.

2. A balloon. This is the second type but also in the Benelux and Germany out of actual practice. Maybe still at about 20% is done with this.

Also big risks on infections, problems with the balloom or blocking the exit from the stomach to the intestines.

NB: fist and second does solve it by bringing a "strange" material into the body. Stomach fluids and body sometimes react very negative on these materials. Irritating the stomach walls inside.

3. Gastric bypass. Is nowadays most used at about 70 to 75% in all cases.

Procedure is simple since actually nothing will be changed in terms of funcionality.

What is done. The stomach is devided in two parts by stapples. One for the food and the second for the stomach liquids. The small intestine will be cut and the end will be lifted to the new created stomach (at about 250 ccm). The cut of intestine fromthe original stomach wil be connected to this new line also. So stomach can still create liquids just the digestion of the food wlll not take partial place in the new stomach but mainly in the intestine after the new connection.

Since the stomach is small in size and when not overdoo will stay like this you cannot eat a lot at one time but have to devide it into smaller portions over the day. Chew the food before swallowing thoroughly. Since the food will fill up the smaller stomach fast and not flow to the intestine when not small enough.

Disadvantage: When go  out for dinner not take buffet but find a restaurant with doggy bags.

While it may not be the most important question, just wondering, what is the cost?

while many obese people can lose weight through diet and exercise there are some that simply cannot, either because they tried it and were not successful or psychologically incapable as it require significant discipline.  the wife of a good friend became morbidly obese and could not exercise due to same but just diet. to jumpstart her return to normal life a gastric surgery was suggested as it could get her down to a weight where she'd be able to exercise.

still waiting to hear about which doctors are world famous ???  and for what. pioneering procedures, cutting edge research, ???

Gastric bypass surgery is something totally (well not totally) different.

If you get this baloon in you stomach AND continue your old habits and lifestyle, simply the stomach gets bigger i a few weeks and you'll not gain any success. The stomach just gets bigger and adapt to the food intake.

OP clearly states "It is also important for the patient to understand that the gastric balloon is a tool to aid weight loss and will provide the best result if associated with proper diet, exercise and a behavior modification program. The amount of weight you lose and maintain will depend on how closely you follow your diet and adopt long-term lifestyle changes."  This is crucial!

Maybe the quarter million Baht will be a motivation:)

There are no "quick fix" i'm afraid.

My bad that i did not understod that this was a commercial from the beginning. Thai Visa really should have the manners (as it's not requested by the law in Thailand) to make it clear when it's a advertisement and when it's a post from random member.

It would even be good for the people buying advertising, not hearing from people like me, ruining (not really ruining, but english is not my native tongue) their business. There is a fool born every day;)

Cheers

good point about the balloon and advertising.

it also seems some posters on medical topics are actually promotors for the services / facility. not uncommon for dental services also.

I would like to inquire about this procedure as well as possibly a latban like solution. The cost listed above is far more expensive 8000 USD roughly and I have seen it as low as 5000 USD here. That said, regardless this is cost prohibitive. Is there a payment plan option? And also does anyone know where I can find this for a much lower price?

Dear FlynnUOGM,

The quoted price is an estimate that usually covers more products and servcies than required. Hence, the real cost is generally less than the estimated price.

Please also note that the price for 2 nights hospital stay is included in the estimated price.

If you would like to request a payment plan option, please email us at [email protected]. Such options are provided on a case-by-case basis.

Thank you!
