Can anyone recommend a reputable carpet cleaning service for our wall to wall short nap carpeting?

My Thai wife and I have been away on an extended trip of 3 months so we asked her father and brother to please look after the house. We said that if they weren't interested in actually staying there, then could they at least go once a day to feed and look after our two lovely Siamese cats. Well we've just returned and surprise, surprise... the house is a disaster zone! We came home to what looked like an indoor tornado had hit the place. The poor cats had gone nuts in the place with no one around to care for them properly or spend time to let them go outside. NO general maintenance cleaning was ever done either, the kitchen floor was covered in trash, the cats however were thankfully alive (apparently the in-laws would come in, throw some food on the kitchen floor and leave). It appears that they NEVER cleaned the cat box either! Uggghhh! I'll spare you the description...

Needless to say the entire house stinks of cat smell and I'm looking to find a service that specializes in carpet cleaning as I think that is the biggest source of the odor problem. We've already scrubbed the kitchen and bathrooms which were in deplorable condition, so it's slowly coming back around. The cats of course are VERY happy to have us back and we're looking forward to restoring our humble abode to it's former happy, comfortable self. Any recommendations would be very welcome and much appreciated!

Replace the carpet. Probably will not get the cat urine smell out. You may want to restrict the cats to a non-carpeted part of the house. If the carpet is cleaned, the cats will always know it has been peed on (sniff, sniff).

Years ago I was offered a huge modern two bedroom condo at an VERY low rent because of extreme cat odor. Three different cleaning companies had been hired by the owners but failed to remove the smell. You couldn't stay in the place without your eyes tearing up!  I needed a cheap place, so asked a Vet what he did to remove smells. He made it very simple.....

Make a solution of 25% vinegar 75% water and spray the carpets and up the walls. Really cover them well. (In your case, you may need to spray the furniture as well.)  Wet everything down, then leave the house for three days with the windows closed. Then open the windows for another two days. When you move back in, ALL THE SMELLS WILL BE GONE, even the vinegar smell.

The animal smells are caused by bacterial growth. The vinegar kills the bacteria. Problem solved, and I moved in to a lovely, large two-bedroom condo on a three year lease for the cost of a small studio apartment... all for the price of a bottle of vinegar.

^^^^ - works well in car interiors too. I use more than 25% tho'. Spray everywhere - over, under, behind. Roll up windows, leave for a day. Also use in my helmets.

Does the water in the mixture cause problems if the house is not "Hot" enough  so  the heat bakes the mixture and evaporates the moisture ?

I did this in northern New England in September. Fall temperatures. Worked fine.

Does  it also get the smell out of the carpet and padding ?

I do not see how it would get down that many layers , and on really bad cases the wood floors under the carpets had urine too ?

Thanks for the info

That condo had wall-to-wall carpeting in every room except the kitchen. The people who lived there previously had several male cats...   I didn't super-saturate anything, just sprayed until it was wet. There was absolutely no lingering  odor after the treatment.  I DID rent a carpet shampooing machine afterwards as there were several large stains on the carpeting that I wanted to remove, but by that time, all the stink was gone.

Fantastic gang... I appreciate everyone who piped in. Pulling up the carpet and putting in new tile was over the top expensive, not to mention not the look or feel we want in the house. So tried the vinegar & water method... Shazaam! Worked like a charm. Now I've got a spray bottle that I've been spritzing in key areas for the past few weeks to keep the cats disinterested in any more foul play in those spots!

Thanks for your time and feedbacks.
