Hi,

Is there any rule for pronunciation of words which include ภูมิ ?

It seems like sometimes it is "Pum Mi" and sometimes just "Pum".

How to pronounce these examples:

ภูมิศาสตร์ - geography

ภูมี - land

ภูมิภาพ - scenery

ภูมิภาค - provincial

ภูมิแพ้; - allergy

ภูมิคุ้มกัน - immune

ภูมิประเทศ - geography

ภูมิวิทยา - geology

มาตุภูมิ - motherland

สมรภูมิ - battlefield

Thank you

Thanks a lot. I am surprised why these two are not the same:

ภูมิศาสตร์ - geography poo me saat

ภูมิภาพ - scenery poom parp

Some other words I know from speaking but nobody I asked know to explain. Let's hope someone will come with a rule, or maybe there is no rule ?

Thanks

B

How could you forget this one สุวรรณภูมิ

I am only taking a wild guess but ภูมี at the end of the word always takes on the poom sound. But there must be a rule as to why sometimes poom when used as the initial sound takes on the poo mee sound? Not ofetn though.

These are patterns or tendencies, not rules, but here are things we can notice:

(1) If it's at the end of a compound it's usually pronounced [phuum].

(2) If it's the first part of a compound in which both parts are of Indic origin (ภูมิ itself being an Indic root), it's usually pronounced [phuumi]. (This is and the next one are the areas with the most variation, I think.)

(3) If it's the first part of a compound in which the second part is not Indic, it's usually pronounced [phuum].

(4) If it's spelled with a long [ii] as ภูมี, the [ii] is always pronounced.

(5) Thai people face this same issue, so you'll hear variation in the pronunciation of native speakers. Either because it's just easier to say [phuum] instead of [phuumi] or because they forget how it's supposed to be pronounced.

Here's another word that hasn't been listed: ภูมิต้านทาน = immunity/immune system. I've heard it pronounced both ways, too.

ภูมิวิทยา - geology poom wit ta yar

This word is now outdated. Geology is now ธรณีวิทยา or ธรณีศาสตร์ and btw. my dictionary says that ภูมิวิทยา is pronounced poom me wit ta yar. :o

Don't forget about: ภูมิใจ pum jai.

ภูมิประเทศ = phoom me pra ted = geographical featured of place

ภูมิฐาน = phoom than or sth like phoom tan (i don't know how to write in phonetic way) = honorable

ภูมิปัญญา = phoom panya = knowledge
