Mrs friends boyfriend is on an extension (don't know which) due for renewal Jan 20th, a Sat. He gets back into the country Friday 19th no time to get up country to the office. Can he go and do the extension on the Monday, or has he blown it?

Yes he should have no problem applying on the Monday.

    Particularly if your wife's friend's boyfriend is on a retirement extension you might like to point out to him, for the future, that he can apply for a fresh extension up to 30 days before his current extension expires (or even up to 45 days beforehand at a few offices). Leaving it to the last minute is IMHO cutting it fine, in case the IO asks to see docs which he has not brought with him.
