BANGKOK, 12th January 2018 (NNT) – Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-ocha has held bilateral discussions with China’s premier on the sidelines of the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation Summit, with China voicing readiness to support Thai rice and rubber production, aiming to increase trade to 120 million USD in value over the next three years.

Prime Minister Gen Prayut held his discussion with Chinese Premier Li Keqiang while the two are attending the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation Summit being held in Cambodia. The two leaders agreed to continue to promote economic ties, with China voicing readiness to support Thai agricultural goods.

Meanwhile, China's State Councilor Wang Yong has scheduled a visit to Thailand to view U-Tapao Airport and the Eastern Economic Corridor project, which has attracted the interest of Chinese enterprises, especially those in the technological sector.

On Thailand and China’s cooperation in constructing a high speed railway system in the Kingdom, a project that began on December 21 2017, the Chinese Premier said he was glad the development was underway and sees it as a reflection of the two countries’ close ties as well as the basis for further collaboration.

The two leaders further discussed joint work to produce personnel for high level industries, agreeing that vocational and technological institutes should be established in Thailand. The Chinese statesman asked that the curriculum of such schools include topics brought up at the sixth Thailand-China Joint Committee for Economics meeting.

A hypothetical discussion might go something like this:

(Prayut) Thailand is concerned about the potential environmental damage from your five-year development plan for the Mekong.

(Li Keqiang) China will buy Thai rice and rubber production, aiming to increase trade to 120 million USD in value over the next three years.

(Prayut) We're good!
