WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Ambassador to Panama John Feeley, a career diplomat and former Marine Corps helicopter pilot, has resigned, saying he no longer felt able to serve President Donald Trump.

Feeley's departure had been communicated to State Department officials on Dec. 27 and was not a response to Trump's alleged use of the word "shithole" to describe Haiti and African countries at a meeting on Thursday, U.S. officials said.

Trump denies using the term.

Feeley, one of the department's Latin America specialists and among its senior most officers, made clear that he had come to a place where he no longer felt able to serve under Trump.

"As a junior foreign service officer, I signed an oath to serve faithfully the president and his administration in an apolitical fashion, even when I might not agree with certain policies," Feeley said, according to an excerpt of a resignation letter read to Reuters on Friday.

"My instructors made clear that if I believed I could not do that, I would be honour bound to resign. That time has come."

A State Department spokeswoman confirmed Feeley's departure, saying that he "has informed the White House, the Department of State, and the Government of Panama of his decision to retire for personal reasons, as of March 9 of this year."

Speaking to reporters, Under Secretary of State Steve Goldstein said he was aware of Feeley's planned departure on Thursday morning, before Trump's alleged use of the vulgar term, and said the ambassador was leaving for "personal reasons."

"Everyone has a line that they will not cross," "Goldstein told reporters at the State Department. "If the ambassador feels that he can no longer serve ... then he has made the right decision for himself and we respect that."

U.S. officials declined to discuss Feeley's reasons for leaving the department after a long career, much of which was spent working on Latin American issues.

Some of Trump's policies have been widely regarded within the region as hostile to Latin America.

The Trump administration has taken a tougher stance on immigration from Latin America, most notably with moves to expel hundreds of thousands of immigrants from El Salvador, Haiti and Nicaragua who benefited from temporary protection status after natural disasters.

Feeley's career included serving as the No. 2 official in the State Department bureau that deals with Latin America, as deputy chief of mission at the U.S. embassy in Mexico City and as director for Central American affairs in Washington.

Sounds like he will be no loss at all - cant say his previous roles have any great success for the People of America - only for the people of those countries (sh*****s) he was working in/for.  Did Trump appoint him or was it Obama - either way - his personal views clearly dont align with the 'New America' (MAGA).

his personal views don't align with the New America (MAGA)

New America (MAGA)  ? Trump rebranded the USA?   or is it like neverneverland?

I would think the man is to be respected, ex Marine pilot that makes choices based on honour.

But then there are those that respect sexual assaulting racist liars.

Those that think Trumplestilskin is for real

A man resigns, because he has the integrity and honesty to say he no longer feels able to represent the policies of the grand poobah of trumptopia, and that’s what you come up with.

MAGA indeed.

USA is a country, where all outlaws of Europe and other areas gathered. This makes up the US. So what do you expect from those "citizens"?

All outlaws of Europe?

If I remember correctly Germany has had quite a few war criminals that  they can call their own , including some rather large players.

Not Surprising at all that Herr Aachen is enamored by the current POTUS is it?

Almost like the good old days.

I can't speak for all Americans but my relatives that migrated to the USA were simply running for their lives. It was leave or get liquidated. I  really don't think Europe can take the moral high ground historically.

Perhaps you're confusing the USA with Australia? :stoner:

Eazy move when you know you're gonna still get near 80% of your salary the rest of your life plus continued access to excellent health insurance.

Yes,  he should have had his pension taken away from him for disagreeing with Trump.

His family should have been rounded up and sent to re education camps.

The American government should be able to back out of their obligations for political reasons.

So, you agree with your Master, that all third world countries are sh++++les? Wow. What can one say? Have you ever been to Panama? Or Latin America? Are you aware that Mexico is a 2.2 trillion dollar a year economy? On alot of levels, Mexico has a more sophisticated culture than the US. Especially now that the average American is gorging on reality TV. The US culture is only going backwards. And you are proof of that. So is the circus clown in chief.

Country GDP (PPP) in millions (Intl$) GDP (PPP) per capita (Intl$)
Brazil 3,259,000 15,941.00
Mexico 2,224,000 18,370.00
Argentina 953,029 22,459.00
Colombia 682,977 14,164.43

A statement like that cannot even be regarded as the workings of a coherent mind. What are you basing your outlaw theories on? The US is a country of outlaws? The Cuban boat crisis? Most immigrants that came to the US, came in the late 1800's and early 1900's, during a time when Europe was rife with war, pestilence, poverty, and oppression. Jews were being persecuted, and life in Europe was very poor. They were hard working people, who brought alot to the table, and helped to make America what it is. Or should I say, what it was. Unfortunately, it is no longer that nation. America is no longer a great country, and nobody, especially the circus clown huckster charlatan, will make it great again.

The US had its own POHMS shipped to them back in the day too.
