Getting second ED visa, need to cancel old one?

Featured Replies

Hi,

I'm just about done studying Thai for a year in Hua Hin with an ED visa, and I'm heading to Vientiane next week to hopefully get a new one for a second year. I'll be heading over the border three days before my last extension expires.

The school is preparing the paperwork for the new visa, but it just hit me that they haven't mentioned anything about cancelling the old ED visa, which I know has been a requirement at the Nong Khai border before.

Is that still a thing? Will I have to cancel the old visa at my local immigration office before I go to Laos to get a new one?

Thanks in advance.

Your visa probably expired long ago and they are not canceled.

I think you are on an extension of stay based upon attending school not a visa.

If you a are going to leave the country at the Nong Khai crossing you will need a letter from your school stating you are no longer attending school dated on or after the day you will be leaving the country.

Yeah, my bad, I meant getting the extension cancelled. Are you sure the immigration officers at the crossing won't send me to the Nong Khai immigration office to get the extension cancelled?

Thanks for the help, really appreciate it.

The could send you to the office but it depends if it is during office hours or not.

You could do it a a few days be fore the date on the letter at you local immigration office and the post date the canceled to that date. If you did it on that date you would have to leave the country by midnight on that day.

I'll be taking the overnight train from Bangkok, so cancelling at my local immigration office and leaving before midnight won't be an option. I'll just get the cancellation letter from my school and hope they let me over the border without fuss.

On a related note, where is the Nong Khai immigration office where I would go to get the extension cancelled? I can only seem to find the "border office" when checking online.

I think you should read my previous post again. You could get the letter from the school with a effective date after you go to immigration in Hua Hin and they will post date the cancellation to the effective date.  For example if you went to the office on the 15th will a letter effective on the 18th the cancellation of your extension would be on the 18th. You could then leave on/or before the 18th without a problem.

Great, I didn't catch that. Then that's what I'll do. Thanks for clearing that up and thank you for all your help.

Thought I'd share what happened in case anyone has a similar question in the future. My school made a bit of fuss regarding the letter to immigration (not that they refused, but they were sure it wasn't needed). They assured me other students had exited at Nong Khai on ED extensions just a few weeks ago without issue, so I decided to not have them do the letter and cancel my extension at the immigration office.

Exited at Nong Khai without issue and they didn't say anything. Got a new ED visa at Vientiane and entered Thailand without any problems. I guess the immigration office might say something when I do my first extension, but I'll guess I'll just have to see.
