:o:D hi all, does anyone know of a small business for sale.ie a thai noodle stall or similar, for my thai wife to run in koh samui.?....the amount of income is not mega important,it would be to stop boredom mainly. Even a halfshare with someone would be good....anything considered....

how about using the kitchen in my bar to run her own business.

offering food to ccustomers and nearby Thai people.

simple business arrangement, just pay the bar a small percent of earnings?

have most of what you need for thai cooking and can print up a menu etc.

just a thought.....

Look closely at Mark's offer, get agreement in writing and move on it, it will be hard to find a better agreement that is win-win.

How about a taco stand

marks offer is pretty tasty. All she has to do is buy grub. Cant loose with that, and she will have other Thai women to hang out with when she is not cooking. If she could learn how to cook English pub grub properly and do it well, she could even earn a few quid. If she does it well. Not many Thais do. So many beer bars that claim to sell pub grub get it wrong... I ordered pie chips/gravy today at one place and got crap pie, a spoon full of gravy and 7 chips. I counted. Half a plate of salad came with it... whats that all about? I cant see the venture too worth while if she turns out Thai grub in a beer bar... Couple'o baht a day and no demographic affiliation with the bar (i.e, thais will not come to marks bar to eat thai food and then skull a few singhas) I say English grub as that suits all... pie, chips, cbangers and mash etc.

Great offer in my opinion - snap it up.

Or.. 20K will buy her a brand new cart, cooker, food to get started, gas, the lot. Sell noodles or something in one of the markets.

If i was you, snap up marks offer.

Cheers.

I think one problem with any of this is location. You can't set up a stand just anywhere you please, and certainly not in the hot zones. Contact your local gangster chief in the area to find out where and if you can stake your claim and how much kickback you need to pay.

Jet - sounds sad, counting chips I know, lol. One of my pet hates though is ordering pub grub and getting crap. Last week i ordered bangers mash and gravy at a small English themed bar that advertised 'best pub grub in town' (wasnt in samui by the way). I got two savloy sausages, three boiled potatoes and a tiny little dipping bowl with gravy.... plus the obligitory half plate of salad. Realy pisses me off.

Anyway, off topic sorry. Good point about the mafia/chief whatever - however all she has to do is ask the guy, just like all the other vendors did. Cant be that hard. I still think marks offer is good - rarely will you be presented with use of a full working kitchen to dish out whatever food you want, and no rent!

hi,

yes i am in lamai.

tel: 08727 46106

in the street that goes from main street up to the ring road.

personally i always thought a decent pasta would sell well, coz i have never seen one in thailand.

i don't think many of my customers would come here for food,

but there are a lot of thai people in the nearby bars and shops.

welcome to drop in and just have a look at the area anytime.

regards

ps. this is not a full-on type of girlie bar, pretty quiet actually.

Every other farang restaurant in Thailand is Italian , selling Pasta and Pizza ! - There are at least 3 Italian Restaurants in Lamai on the main beach road . Lots of Russian tourists in Samui now - What about some Russian Food - There isn't a Japanese Restaurant in Lamai - or what about modern British - there are plenty of pie and chip places --But It would be nice to have some decent British Food for a change - For instance some of Jamie Oliver's menu's ( not the ones for school kids !) or the Sea Food chap ( I forget his name ) from Cornwall ( Padstow I think )

Yep, pasta/pizza.... are you kidding mark? Thats the absoloute no.1 ferang food in Thailand! And knocking up decent Italain food is hard in a beer bar, forget it.

As Churchil said - English pub grub is the way forward. just 8/10 simple items on the menu, but do it well.

Churchill.... is that right about many Rushain tourists in Samui/ I have not been there for a year and half but lived there for two and a half and didnt meet one single Rusian. Im moving back to Samui soon - i figure on a whole different island from the things i have heard.

*Edit* Not that thats a problem or anything, i have nothing against russians!

A lot of Russians generally in Thailand , with lots of direct flights to Bangkok from many cities in Russia - I think they mostly go to Chaweng though . A lot of Russian ( hot ? ) money still coming to Thailand .

The chap from Cornwall - Rick Stein - does a lot of fantastic things with seafood -

Actually the Pizza and Pasta in Samui are not too bad compare to many

other places in the world, I can tall you because Im from

The Pizza Country :D I'm Italian and with my Italian wife we will

arrive in Samui end of March and we hope to stay as long as possible.

We have the house already only looking for work possibilities in order

to extend our Visa B/O single entry (we are far from 50 yrs of age...).

Back to the topic, may be it's a stupid idea (we will need to check

the current market before to make a big flop as many others)

but have you never been in a bar where you find free appetizer

dishes like small pieces of pizza, focaccia, some cold pasta, cold rice,

some salami slices, cheese cube etc etc ?

It's very very trendy since few years here and you recover the cost of

this free food, making a fix price for each drink (Eg.: 150 bath)

does not matter if is a beer or a cocktail or a Coca.

Or Fix price for the first drink and variable from the second one on.

Usually those place are with music and full of people from 5 pm to 9 pm

that's why we called Aperitif Bar (not longer happy hour out of date here)

I have many other ideas about those kind of things, take for additional example

a restaurant set-up already, make it different from the others:

offer the possibility to serve a select combination of food

with the correct combination of wine to drink with,

of course you need me in this case because I'm a sommelier (wine tasting) :o

I always worked as Sales and Marketing manager in a multinational contest....

but wine and food is a typical passion for me....

Cheers, good luck to you too guys !!

Good Idea, but you said it right in the beginning - it might be "stupid" cause I can 't imagine anyone in his right mind spending 150 Baht on a Coke.... for access to "free" food!

Do have an Idea how the price of the "cheese cubes, some salami, maybe sundried marinated tomatoes" and the like will effect the real earnings?

We had a "tapas bar" around here, guess what... it's closed since long. It wasn't the Ambience, it wasn't for the food... it was for the customers they did make different choices, because it's up to them!

If you want to make it a winner - you will have to be ready for looong hours, no holidays (except in low season) and hard, hard work - it's the Land of plenty - but as anywhere lese on this planet you will have to dig for it, especially in the tourism, entertainment, catering and restaurant industry.

there ain't no fried ducks flying around there.... I've never seen any.. :o

Samuiian - I'll tel you two things in the catering indsutry that would fly in Chaweng... A very nicely themed, all singing, all dancing, Mexican restraunt. Realy go to town on the place and make it look like a Mexican Walt Disney designed it, get a band over from Mexico and sell proper food, and the monehly revenue would be millions per month. It would cost a bucket load to set up, but would be a real earner.

Secondly, a proper Tapinyakie bar (spelling?). Copy any one of the Bangkok Jap places in Silom and stick it bang in the midle of Chaweng.

Also, why the hel_l has no one set a Subway franchise up in Chaweng yet? License to print money if you ask me.

Not that many consistently good, fairly priced restaurants in main Lamai though are there? Maybe do a survey to see what people are hankering for. And more than 7 chips is good. Course folks always change their minds. :o

That would be Stewart, right? Feel for the bloke, must have lost a ton of money. Cost him millions of baht to tart that bar up. I remember when he built it, i figured it would be popular for a month and then crash. If your going to set up a bar in Mango, make it like kangeroo bar... a fun place for the tourists to get pissed. The pharmacy would look ok in a London Soho street but a tropical isalnd? Forget it... Leave that to people like Q Club who have experience in promotion, booking DJ's etc. Pure waste of money that place was, and i knew it from the start.

The bloke who built Pahramacy for Stewart also built Crash bar for Christian that you mention.

That would be Ecko. He set it up in tandem with his burger bar at Shooters, soi regeae, now gone. I believe he does ok there. The silly sod got busted for no work permit last year - cost him 100K to talk his way out of it.
