Undercover police drag Rittikrai Chaiwannasan away Friday moments after he assaulted pro-democracy activist Ekachai Hongkanwan.

BANGKOK — A man was arrested Friday after attempting to punch an activist who has been staging daily protests over a junta boss’ collection of luxury watches at the Government House.

Rittikrai Chaiwannasan, 56, was charged with physical assault and carrying a knife in public. A police official said undercover officers stopped Rittikrai just in time before he harmed activist Ekachai Hongkangwan.

“He was definitely sent to do it,” Ekachai said. “In the past, I’ve encountered this kind of thing before, but at most they were just pointing at my face and scolding me. In this case, he closed up on me, even though there were many policemen. Someone was definitely behind it.”

Does anyone see a resemblance in this attackers face?

Mad as? I find it hard to believe that this guy was taking orders from above, but it won't help the General.

I find it hard to believe this guy was taking orders from above too. Because if that was the case the police would not have taken him away or prevented this.  Instead of thanking the police and goverment for doing their job and letting him protests he accuses them without any proof to be behind it.

It makes no sense for them to be behind it.. it would look bad.. and if they were behind it it would not have been done like this. They are not that incompetent.

It's a veiled threat and a warning

He's sending a message he cannot do it openly any more

what happened to 'peace and order'?

That is a bit far fetched, because if this guy was government send and is now facing charges he would sing like a canary and a far larger can of worms would be opened. It just does not make any sense at all. There are far better ways to do this and I am sure they are not that incompetent.

Plus even this is bad publicity.. who knows its false flag and the guy orchestrated the attack on himself to discredit the goverment.. sound as far fetched as your story.

I go for a fanatic junta supporter loner wanting to protect Prawit (stupidly misguided) Because it does more damage then good.

But is he really facing charges?

He is charged.. read the Khaosad.. the red newspaper.. they would have reported it otherwise.

If he goes to prison I'll say I was wrong

How many people do you see going to prison for something like this.. just read up on road rage incidents.

I dislike the junta.. but like logic.. this is not logical at all. This only harms them and if they wanted to send a threat they would not do it like this with the press watching. The more i think about it the more false flag sound logical. Just think if the security forces had not done a thing this guy would have been assaulted and maybe even a martyr. That is exactly what the anti goverment needs and exactly what the junta does not need.

Terrible. Can't possibly hold elections with incidents like this :coffee1:.

I'm sure if they wanted to silence him temporarily or for good, it would be some sneaky sleazy behind the scenes way or some trumped up charge. That is their way.

it's in the same place as 'reconciliation'.

I think the attacker was probably  paid to do it and quaranteed no problems after. Just a show to get support for the junta. Now the junta can say they are doing everything transparently and have no fear of the truth. They can boast they go so far as to protect the people who are protesting against them. A pure publicity stunt.

Undercover bib watching activists. This is completely normal and who would think otherwise under junta rule ? FBI been watching anti gov activists for decades .

A violent individual wrong place wrong time.

How odd the TV sleuths would come up with totall conspiracy nonsense, never happened before [emoji23]

Agreed. Can't arrest him cos it will look bad. Have someone intimidate him and then come to the rescue. Win-win.

It's just a tactic that gets used here whoever is in power. Probably not so surprising under military rule but this kind of thing has always gone on. In the very earliest  days of protests against Thaksin, when it was just a handful of elderly people protesting at a shopping centre, they were set upon by a gang of thugs. And I can remember similar happening under various governments in my time here. There won't be a direct connection to the top but someone will be directing it.

Think about it.

A member of the public defending the Junta (junta is popular with the people)

The junta defending the protestor (junta is impartial)

Unrest (junta delays elections)

It only looks bad if people know they are behind it.

So your getting from the angle the junta defending the guy makes them popular. I am going from the angle that all the news on Prawit makes him even more unpopular (if possible). I just don't see how the junta gains anything by having this under media attention again. They just want it to die down.

Personally i just think it was a person who loves the junta and who acted alone. My other options are of course false flag by the protester. But seeing as we can't prove any of it and it can be explained every way its just pure speculation on everyone's side.

Why do posters get so worked up about these things.

I honestly don't get the idea behind posts on things that you can absolutely have any effect on.

I rarely go to the bars now because as sjre as eggs is eggs someone will want to start on politics, or worse, religion.

Relax and get on with your life and let the people who are paid to be politicians get on with it.

You're not going to change anything posting or talking about it on a social nights out.

You do realize you just gave your opinion right? No different to any of the other stuff. Just opinions

Yep. What do think about the new Mercedes S500?
So back in the game now? Lol that was quick

This activist should know Prawit is well protected.

Interesting, activist Ekachai Hongkangwan was obviously accompanied by some undercover police.

I wouldn't be so sure about that.

I imagine more that a few TVF members recall clearly this event:

And the rest is history...
