As you know it was built almost directly across the road from a large Big C, and yet in total contrast Big C and all its eateries are teaming with customers. Thais are not stupid, why eat somewhere that costs twice the price for pretty much the same food as you can get over the road for half the price? A coffee on one side of the road for 90 baht and 40 baht on the other side... Also a relative disparity of pricing in the supermarkets for generally the same products. January 24, 20188 yr Korat does seem to be the exception. UdonThani is slightly smaller than Korat but all the malls (bar one or two) are thriving. Ten years ago, Udon had a Central Plaza, a night market, one BiGC and one Tesco Lotus. Now it has Central Plaza. a night market, 2 BigC, 2 Tesco Lotus, Landmark Plaza, Premium Outlet and UDtown (claimed to be Thailand's largest outdoor shopping centre, bigger than Chatuchak market). The only place you will find any parking on a weekend is at Premium Outlet, (which is the quietest of them, but still ticking over). The rest are always busy, although UDtown is mainly an evening place. They recently expanded the parking at UDtown because of the demand. The only total failure was a setup called 168 Platinum which, like Brewster's malls, was made up of purely small local units. Within 3 months it was dying. Udon had a mini Condo boom after the 2011-12 floods, when about 5 developments were announced (presumed boltholes for flooded Bangkokians). 3 were started and 2 completed, but after an initial surge of interest sales plummeted (why pay a million baht for a unit not much bigger than a hotel room, or larger units which were the same price as a house with more space).
