richard_smith237
Hopefully no booze involved (give it was 1am)... It also seems that both parties were wearing seatbelts, they were both lucky... Well, the Thai guy was extremely unlucky to be involved in an accident - however, he was lucky to have survived a head on with minor chest pains which I assume are attributed to the seatbelt. Guest
The unfortunate fact is that people are driving way too fast, even in this quite remote location. By the looks of the photos, it seems that the accident took place on top of the hill. Neither driver could not see each other, before it was too late. It's not uncommon that cars make high speed overtakes, even when approaching that hill.
realenglish1
More importantly some find it difficult to drive on their opposite side of the road
jaiyen
Another factor is that is many tourists drive on the other side of the road in their country and when they are driving with no other traffic around sometimes go onto what they think is the natural side of the road. There have been many crashes in Thailand for this reason.

LivinginKata
'Fatigued from boxing training earlier that evening, Mr Prokhodnoy told police that he fell asleep at the wheel and veered into the oncoming lane, where he collided with the Honda City travelling in the opposite direction.' The crash happened at 01.00 - what do you think caused him to 'fall asleep'

"pure speculation" - sure, but statistics tend to back up my assumption.
