Medical bills spiral for burn victims in Phi Phi tour boat fireball

No, that's a particularly bad start.

They're all in the Bangkok Hospital Phuket which is not a "small town hospital" by any stretch of the imagination, neither is it in an "out of the way place", neither is it in a 3rd world country but even if your last two assertions were correct, it wouldn't matter because of the international quality of treatment that they will be getting at an internationally recognized hospital.

Why would it have been reported that some are in local government hospitals when they are all in the same place as the article you're commenting on confirms?

Let's hear the other "reasons" that you could go on about, then.

I stand corrected on the private vs public hospital issue. The injured crewman is at a public hospital.

But yes, Phuket is an out of the way place relatively speaking and Thailand operates as a third world country, despite some 2nd world veneer. But I'll go back to my original question, now more fine tuned, does Bangkok Hospital Phuket have a burn ward? Specialists in burn-induced skin grafts?  I seriously doubt it.

How do they dare to ask for quality tourists from Europe? if that boat had been full of Europeans the costs would have 10-foulded already and most would have flown home already to get the best treatment overthere.

What a complete (bad) joke it is...why the government doesn't jump in and say that ALL medical bills will be paid by them and ALL can get the best treatment available? Plus a refund of their WHOLE holiday to Thailand which is totally ruined by this dumb accident.

I believe the travel insurance rule will now be put back in the fore front. Do you actually belive any government pays for tourists medical.

They also did that for the victims of the bomb at the Erawan shrine...so why not this time?

As far as the reputation and qualifications of this hospital, it's medical staff and the massive medical group that it is part of is concerned, they are not in an 'out of the way place', they are in a first class hospital, the geographic location of which, as far as they are concerned, is irrelevant because they are being treated for what they need to be treated for within the bounds of the facility.  Your specific question is only relevant if the patients there need skin grafts; if there is no one there qualified to treat them they wouldn't still be there, would they?

Judging by the fact that the patients are in that hospital, being treated for their injuries, with no complaints that they are not being treated because there is no one qualified to do that, for you to suggest that there may be no specialists there able to treat them for those same injuries is beyond ridiculous.   Are you really suggesting, rationally, that they are not being treated as necessary?

There is no suggestion from anyone qualified to make that suggestion (your overtly biased opinion doesn't count) that there is any difference between the treatment BHP is giving them and any other international standard hospital in any other country.

Out of the way!!

Phuket is currently ranked 11th in the most visited places in the world. It is ahead of such cities as LA, Rome, Madrid, Tokyo, and Mecca.

This is BHP which you have described as a small town hospital:

PBH.jpg

Burns victims are treated in the ICU by specialist surgeons In the same way as in the Bangkok located hospital. To give you some insight into the services this Internationally renowned hospital provides you can find a list of their clinics here:

http://www.phukethospital.com/Medical-Services.php

I don't know why so many ill informed posters have a need to constantly try to talk down what Phuket has and is, but it really only reflects back on yourselves.

Well said.

What you diplomatically refer to as talking down is just Thaivisa member's Thai-bashing which some people, such as the one here enjoying trying (and failing) to knock BHP, have a propensity to do for no justifiable reason at all.

I presume you're talking about the compulsory travel insurance for Thailand?

There is insurance in this case, so I fail to see why this doomed idea would be put back in the fore front due to this accident.

When my wife comes to europe she needs to show her travelinsurance to get a visa....

And our hospitals always help victims first before asking anything, in case they are not insured i guess the country pays the bill....This is for ANY victim arriving at any hospital, even wounded terrorists without passport get treatment in the hospital.

Thailand does the same and like the West they expect payment after surgery. Nothing is free if you are out of your home country and uninsured

Thailand has never seen my travelinsurance papers....i and i have gotten loads of visa's already.

As i wrote, in my homecountry you will get medical  help in the hospital without any papers....we think it's our duty to help ANY person arriving at a hospital. So maybe we are above the 1st world with that?

I have never ever heard of people getting refused medicare at our hospital....even refugee's get all the medicare they need....for free that is...we are not the USA but W-Europe.

Any victim taken in an emergency situation to hospital in Thailand will also get emergency treatment exactly as in your wonderful country.

As you would in Thailand.

Above 1st world?  You wish!  You're not American, or living in America, by any chance are you?

I don't think he is actually in Thailand, he's one of those who like to bash Thailand from offshore!

"When my wife comes to Europe..."

That suggests very strongly that you are in Europe.

"i have gotten.."

That suggests very strongly that you are a Yank.

What if you are unconscious, but insured?  How can you arrange payment?  You can't, so you are dead.

The post you're responding to says 'payment expected after surgery'.
