A Finless porpoise’s carcass washed ashore in Laem Sai Beach in Surat Thani's Chaiya district on Sunday morning, Governor Wichawuth Jinto said as he led a team to inspect the animal.

The 20-kilogram, 1.1-metre-long female Finless porpoise was death of an endangered marine mammal this year following the death of an Irrawaddy dolphin.

It was initially suspected to have been the victim of decompression illness as the area experienced heavy rain with large amounts of freshwater draining into sea and strong wind and waves.

The carcass also showed traces of being cut by a net.

It was sent for an autopsy to determine the cause of death at the Gulf of Thailand's Marine and Coastal Resource Research and Development in Chumphon.
