US Senator Patrick Leahy’s office confirmed yesterday that bipartisan legislation is being drafted to introduce new sanctions against the Cambodian government.

“Senator Leahy and others here are increasingly concerned with the actions of [Prime Minister] Hun Sen and the Cambodian People’s Party, supported by the Chinese government, to dismantle the institutions of democracy in Cambodia which the United States and other countries have spent years helping to build,” Leahy’s foreign policy aide, Tim Rieser, said via email.

Rieser said the US has been left with “few options other than to increase sanctions”.

I f America wanted to help Cambodia, it could clean up the lasting after effects of their secret, criminal war.

The United States dropped 2.75 million tons of bombs, and warring factions placed millions of mines during nearly three decades of conflict in Cambodia. An estimated 4 million to 6 million land mines and other unexploded ordnance still remain in Cambodia from more than three decades of armed conflict. According to the activist group Destroy Land Mines Before They Destroy Us eight of ten families in Cambodia are exposed to land mines and so far only about 5 percent of affected areas have been cleared.

No secret about the death, destruction and genocide that took place in Cambodia. Ask the Khmer Rouge about their part in it. One is in office as I type.

The Khmer Rouge didn t drop 2.7 million tons of bombs on Cambodia, the USA did.  The Khmer Rouge did not come to power until 1976 some 6 years after the "secret war" against Cambodia had started.

Operation Menu was the codename of a covert United States Strategic Air Command (SAC) bombing campaign conducted in eastern Cambodia from 18 March 1969 until 26 May 1970, during the Vietnam War.

The United States dropped upwards of 2.7 million tons of bombs on Cambodia, exceeding the amount it had dropped on Japan during WWII (including Hiroshima ... however,as many as 500,000 people died as a direct result of the bombings while perhaps hundreds of thousands more died from the effects of displacement, ...

The Khmer Rouge would likely not have survived without the support of its old patron China and a surprising new ally: the United States. ...

Apr 23, 1998 - Nowhere was there any mention of U.S. support for the Khmer Rouge under Pol Pot, though this had been well documented. The following letter was

Judging by history European invasions at least left countries they occupied with some positive implementations like civil law and so on.

As for Americans they did use and still willing to use unbelievable amounts of military power resulting in the deaths of millions, the destruction of those countries and worse no regrets (help) as well!

P.S No U.S citizen in this world can be prosecuted out side his home country by the International Court of Justice or the International Criminal Court in Hague, Netherlands, and if it happens then expect U.S invasion to rescue him.

What country are you from? It would be of great interest to dissect its "bloody" history as well.

The Vietnam war could of being avoided and not so much death and destruction and to this day if you look at Cambodia at all the people who have no legs from land mines do you think is that is Ok? What Issan was trying to say was and he is right Who is responsible for clearing all these land mines? Guess that dont matter does it? Not looking at american history we are looking at a problem that nobody seems to want to fix.  As for the Khmer Rouge they only came into being because the Us had installed  like South Vietnam a government that was corrupt and the people did not want that? Look i dont care what america does on its own soil but they have the nerve to say we going to impose sanctions on a country that they have nearly destroyed? It is a bit rich dont you think? Why dont they impose sanctions on Saudi Arabia where people have no rights and there is no opposition because the Government has them in prison or killed them all. Can you think of any reason why there are no sanctions on them? I can OIL

Nothing to do with bloody history Its the fact that the USA wants to impose sanctions on a country that it has  nearly destroyed. A very poor country also. Who do you think the sanctions will  hurt the most?  The people of coarse and by reading what Issan wrote dont you think they have suffered enough?
