Renting a motorbike in Hat Yai without leaving passport

I know most rental shops in Thailand require renters to leave their passport as collateral, but I refuse to do it.  I've found shops in Chiang Mai and Isaan who will accept a cash deposit in lieu of a passport, but I haven't had any luck in Hat Yai.  Any recommendations?

You could try leaving a photocopy of your passport.  They probably just want proof of identity so they can stop you leaving the country if you run off with their bike.

It is a local thing. What happens if you drive/ride into a gated moobahn? Even Thais have to leave their ID card at the gate. I would say it it is "normal"

 

It is your prerogative not to want to but you are trying to buck the system.

But, by leaving the passport at the bike shop, the alien is then breaking Thai law which requires us to carry out passport on us at all times. 

 

So if he is out riding, and the police stop him and asks for his passport he will be in trouble.

never heard of any motorbike rental shops in hat yai..... if there were any, they’d be pretty nervous about “losing” their bikes over the border.
