About 100 villagers on Wednesday successfully blocked railway officials from demolishing the house of an ailing 63-year-old woman in Trang's Muang district.

About 10 officials from the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) went to Malee Buarak’s house only to find a crowd gathered, which deterred them from tearing down the house.

The house is built on the edge of the road along Ban Plaimun-Wat Rassadorn Ruenrom railway.

The primary administrative court ordered the demolition after it found that it was built on SRT land.

With tears in her eyes, Malee told the officials that she had third-stage cancer and did not have anywhere else to go. She begged them to wait for a decision by the administrative appeals court first as she planned to appeal against the primary court's ruling.

Nitip Kongthong, a leader of a four-region slum network, took part in the talks with the SRT officials. Nitip said the SRT should allow the woman to stay pending the appeal.

The officials later agreed to leave the area.

Soldiers and district officials were also dispatched to maintain security during the confrontation.
