Dahlias - Growing in Thailand

Featured Replies

Has anyone here grown Dahlias and if so can you offer any advice on how to, pests, when to sow etc?

I grow them in the UK and a pal who lives close to Phayuha Khiri  would also like to grow them.

TIA

No, and I have never seen them. I'm pretty sure that it is too hot and dry here.

Come to that I wasn't aware that you could buy Dahlia seeds either.

Give it a go.

I saw many dahlias being grown up around Mae Hong Son, when we lived up there.

I seem to remember that there is an annual exhibition of dahlias held at Korat each year. Sorry but I don't remember any other details.

Thanks to all for taking the time to reply.

I'll have a go and I'll update the thread with how I get on later in the year.

Found some people growing them in the Philippines on a Facebook Dahlia group and was told that they can be grown here in Thailand at any time of the year.

Started a few off outside using green netting as shade.

. . . and they have germinated and are coming along nicely.

I'll continue to update the thread.

Overall the germination rate was poorer than in the UK - Around a 50% success rate - Though this could be as I germinate them in a heated propagator in the UK.

When potted on, quite a few die compared to hardly any in the UK.

I'm back in the UK now and will update when I'm sent more information.

A late update

They were looking OK when I left & then I was told that they had all died.

I suspect that they were over watered as I saw someone doing this, despite my saying that Dahlias prefer to be on the dry side.

I'm going to have another go this year.
