TAT seeks China’s help to stop damage by Chinese tourists

Frequent cases of Chinese tourists damaging coral reefs and other fragile sea natural resources have prompted the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) to seek help from its Chinese counterpart.
 

Phanu Woramitr, director of the TAT office for Hat Yai, Songkhla and Satoon said on Tuesday that TAT has sent a letter to the Chinese tourism agency asking it to warn Chinese tourists to behave while visiting Thailand.

 

The Chinese tourism agency was asked to tell Chinese tourists to strictly observe Thai laws and regulations when they visit national parks, temples, seas and coral reefs to avoid damaging fragile natural resources.

 

Chinese visitors have been asked not to touch anything while visiting such places so they won’t cause damage, Phanu said.

 

He said park and provincial officials have also been alerted to help warn visiting Chinese tourists against damaging the places they visit.

 

The chief tourism and sports officer for Satun, Atcharin Muangchan, said she has been compiling information about environmental damage caused by tourists, especially Chinese tourists, to coral reefs.

 

The information will be raised during a meeting to develop Satun tourism on March 2, which will be chaired by the Satun governor and will be attended by representatives from all relevant sectors, Atcharin said.

 

She said the provincial administration would produce pamphlets in the Chinese language to distribute to tourists to warn them against destroying fragile sea natural resources during their visit.

Yeah right, when pigs fly.  The TAT is going to bite the hand that feeds them???  Chinese tourists, the Lo So ones at least have absolutely no manners, no clue on proper behavior and could care less what Thais think about them.  Here in Chiang Mai you can see them ignoring signs in wats, around the moat and other tourist venues.  They are like cockroaches, you simply cannot get rid of them.  Add in the money they spend and do you really think the TAT is going to do anthing but pay lip service for their bad behavior???

The Chinese responded that Thais just don't understand "Chineseness" and need to become more civilized in order to understand superior cultures.

You may not be laughing in 7 to 10 years when this place in my opinion is ruled (mostly behind the scenes) by Chinese.

It will all end up being about the money.

Cockroaches don't do smoking in restaurants , gobbing and having a pony'n'trap on the sidewalks and blocking the prom' en masse .. Its most unfair to compare them to Chinese and besides they've been around a long time .. 320 mill yrs by all account's which is probably longer than the Chinese ..

I doubt that the tourists can visit corals reef without a guide. And by law (almost) all guides are Thai. So I would suggest that the Thai guides get the right information and support to enforce the law (of not destroying corals).

Might be a little late in the season though. The only tourists these days are the Chinese and, far and few between, some Russian clusters.

TAT, the Thai people, the infrastructure, the greed, communication and language shortcomings, the local shortsightedness doing everything Thai-style by Thais has painted this slice of the monetary cake nicely into the proverbial corner.

The Caucasians are gone, successfully gotten rid of by cheating, overpricing and overcharging, ripping off while not even keeping previous standards. Those countries with tourists who have 1) some education and 2) some money - go elsewhere, where they get less or not short changed at all. 

 

This problem is home made and has to be fixed accordingly. Increase the pricing, streamline your visa system as not everybody seeking a tourist visa is willing to open bank records, provide health certificates confirming that they are no suffering from elephantiasis nor syphilis etc., Allow tourists to open bank accounts without birth certificates going back to the 16th century, they want to park their money there and withdraw it there and when they need; forget about the surcharge of THB 150 for ATM-usage with a non-Thai (Alien springs to mind) card. 

All tiny little narrow-minded rubbish which most people outrageously hate or, as in the Chinese example, simply do not care and not follow. Go figure - you bunch of clowns down at the TAT; an organization of seriously too many clowns and not enough circuses......
