Hello,

My friend had a multiple entry non immigrant O visa (he's married). He recently went on a border run to get it revalidated for another 3 months. however, given the new laws pertaining to O marriage visas (my friend has no salary and no real savings coming in from the USA) they refused to give him his 3 months. instead, they gave him a 60 day tourist visa.

He has been told by a fellow farang that he can go to the ministry of Foreign Affairs and, as long as he has at least 21 days remaining on his visa, get it changed to a Non Imm O marriage visa.

I am helping him find out what documents he would need to complete such a process.

Has anyone done this?

Or, does anyone know if this information is indeed incorrect?

I am currently going through the MFA website and shall update this post with my findings.

Thanks

james

You do not obtain a visa on a border run. Are you saying he went to a Royal Thai Consulate? Where? I assume he had marriage certificate and signed copy of wife ID card to present?

MFA does not change visas. The information is totally false. Only immigration does that and he would need 400k in a Thai bank account or income of 40k per month to do so.

Hi,

he went to 'Mukthahaan' (in Laos) consulate and applied for another 3 month marriage visa (he was already staying in LOS on a 3 month marriage visa but was told that he had already had one within a twelve month period and he couldn't get another. he had all the necessary documents (certificate of marriage etc.) with him.

He couldn't extend the 3 month marriage visa or apply for a new 3 month marriage visa.

He could only leave with a 60 tourist visa.

?

The terminology used to describe MFA service is 'Visa Alteration'... does that ring any bells?

He should try either Kuala Lumpur or Singapore if he wants a non immigrant O visa. He might even be able to obtain a multi entry at those locations.

He can not change his visa at MFA - they only deal in visas issued outside of Thailand and there is no such provision for change. The change these people are talking about is done by Immigration as a prelude to normal one year extensions of stay. However the requirements are still the old 400k in bank account or 40k income. If he has that he could change to a single entry non immigrant O visa one time. But he would not be able to extend his stay without family income of 40k per month (the new rules).
