Social media users have praised foreign tourists for saving a 15-year-old Thai boy’s life using cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on Sunday at Wat Tham Sua in Krabi province.

Commentators also suggested more members of the public should be trained in CPR, while others recommended that the tourist attraction should be equipped with a first-aid kit, oxygen tank and stretcher.

The unidentified teenager collapsed on the 1,000th step of 1,237-step stairway to Wat Tham Sua, after which a foreign tourist applied CPR.

Foreign and Thai tourists as well as rescue workers from the Krabi Pitak Pracha Foundation brought the boy back to ground level over the course of an hour.

The original post on Facebook depicting the rescue received 4,300 “likes”, more than 200 comments and was shared by 1,242 people.

The boy reportedly suffered tachycardia, or an elevated heart rate, and an acute respiratory problem from severe exhaustion and passed out with weak vital signs, but the immediate application of CPR stabilised him. He is now recovering in hospital.

Well, they may need a few if its 1200 steps high, knowing Thais they would place it 1199 steps away form where it would be needed.

Climbing the 1,237-step stairway to Wat Tham Sua at the Tiger Cave Temple is well worth the efforts, when you rest and enjoy the stunning views from the temple.  But it´s not the place to climb, if you have any heart conditions. Also not a nice place to be carried down on a stretcher head first, as most of the stairway is quite steep.

yes well done. i do find it strange the rescue workers that brought the equipment weren't doing it though. unless it was taking so long they needed a hand. anyway well done boys. nice to have some good news stories about farangs here from time to time

It is a very very steep climb having been there, 1,237 steps and about about half an hour to get to the top if your fit, suffice to say the CPR would have been conducted long before the rescue team got there, because it is also a fair drive from the main town, if memory serves me as it been over a decade since I have been, and the equipment wouldn't have been required, but bringing him down on a stretcher would have been very challenging, having carried a young one on my shoulders, that was enough for me.
