More than 13,000 marijuana plants were destroyed in Takeo province’s Kirivong district on Sunday, but no suspects were arrested. District police officer Lunch Thorn said yesterday that 13,374 marijuana plants were uprooted from the ground.

District police chief Yuk Sarath, who led 77 officials to destroy the crops, said the suspects had planted the marijuana in 75 locations and used 49 wells to water the plants over an area of 4,731 square metres. “We are investigating to arrest the owners of these marijuana plants to punish them according to the law,” he said.

So far this year, Takeo provincial authorities have discovered and destroyed 107,641 marijuana plants, but have arrested no one, according to Mr Sarath, who noted that his officials burned 300,000 marijuana plants in 2017. Last year, the government’s anti-drug campaign resulted in the arrest of 17,747 people for various drug offences and the seizure of more than 173 kilograms of illicit substances.
