German tourist arrested for falsely claiming there is a bomb in his baggage

A 70-year German tourist is facing a 5-year jailterm and/or a maximum fine of 200,000 baht for making a hoax on board a plane that there is a bomb in his baggage.

Ernst Gunther Walter reportedly gestured air crews to remain quiet as he pointed his finger at the overhead baggage compartment and said “boom”, causing panic among the crews and the other passengers on board the plane at Suvarnabhumi airport.

The German tourist was then escorted out of the plane bound for Chiang Rai and taken to the Suvarnabhumi police for interrogation.

Meanwhile, all the other passengers were ushered out of the plane and all the baggage on the plane offloaded for examination by officials from the explosive ordnance disposal unit.  No bombs were found after hours of examination.

Nope, nothing, nada. Just tried Google "Germany 1928" , nothing comes up to say they were smart. Do you have a link?

We Brits often joke that Germans lack a sense of humour.

Perhaps they just have a "different" sense of humour (well, this German certainly does).

What a complete dill. I hope there is a common blacklist shared among all airlines and that this guy gets put on it so he could never fly with anyone ever again.

Why would they get scared of him saying 'boom'?? He did not say 'bomb'.

Maybe Herr Gunther did too much BOOM BOOM in Pattaya and could not get it out of his head, especially when drunk.

I bet all the other passengers were very angry; with several hours lost, the inconvenience and all that.

I have a feeling he'll probably get away with it, without any jail sentence (possibly due to the age factor). Just a guess.

He did not want to go home to Germany
He has a good pension so he lives well in Thai prison.
so he can write a book about life in thai prison on his old days

sounds like an over the top reaction to a stupid joke. Did he send an hoax email, letter or actually say there's a bomb on board ? did someone actually ask him what he meant by the gesture ? just an over excited old man.

Anyone these days who is unaware of the fact that you never, NEVER make jokes about bombs when anywhere near airports or aircraft has to be a complete moron. I don't know how many times I've read about people being arrested for making a flippant remark about bombs while waiting in the check-in line or whatever. Yes, it's an over-the-top reaction to a stupid attempt at humour, but it is what it is, and anyone who is unaware of that shouldn't be flying at all.

Oh Dear !!...What is it with such morons to flock into Thailand ?!!

I totally understand. The poor bloke couldn´t get a visa longer than 90-days. What does a sensible man do? One alternative is appearently to scream bomb, and have the great chance to stay 5 year in beautiful Thailand, totally free of charge too.

Just another moronic idiot, probably on his way to one of the countries fine and classy tourist destinations.

He might have said boom boom. That's the nickname of Boris Becker. He had a photo in his bag and a racquet.

those of us living here in chiang rai are happy he didnt make it

glad he was not a Brit.

Any medical check regarding dementia?

Perhaps he meant "bombe"?

" It was used to help breaking the German Enigma codes and was (partly) based on the so-called BOMBA, an earlier machine developed by Polish mathematicians in 1938. From 1943 onwards, an improved version of the 4-wheel BOMBE was built in the US by the US Navy and, separately, by the US Army."

What a stupid and racist comment.  This guy in no way represents all Germans, just as your inane comment does not represent all people wherever you are from.

your pension gets stopped when you are in prison

A bit drunk, apparently - the stupidest stupid of stupidoo. You do not make any jokes about bombs anywhere near an airport or commercial flight. Like, we all know this. Where's this guy been living, in a cocoon somewhere, insulated from everyday life.

Bangkok hilton for him.

The German sense of humour is no laughing matter.

What race are Germans? Germany is a country not a race.

Your inane remark says a lot.

Nice try.  Your ass-inane reply overlooks the headline which says "German tourist".

Every cloud has a silver lining (1) He won't say Boom again (ii) He just might reflect on being pissed at 10.50am. No sympathy here.
