Unions and the Garment Manufacturers Association in Cambodia expressed their appreciation to the government yesterday for announcing it would pay a cash advance to workers whose bosses escaped without paying their wages and bonuses. The money will be distributed to workers beginning next week.

Speaking to more than 17,000 workers from eight factories in Kampong Speu province’s Samrong Tong district yesterday, Prime Minister Hun Sen said the government was prepared to pay $4.6 million to 4,100 workers whose bosses ran away, meaning each worker would get about $1,100.

“I want all workers whose employers fled to know that the government will give them a cash advance. We have $4.6 million to pay those workers. We used to do it like this in the past,” he said. Mr Hun Sen ordered the Labour Minister to give the money to workers as quickly as possible and solve the issue of missing employers afterwards.
