More than 30 surf and water sports operators gathered at Phuket Provincial Hall yesterday (March 7) calling for more beach space to conduct their businesses.

The group handed the letter to the Chief of Phuket Provincial Office, Thalerngsak Nutprahan, who will hand over the letter to Phuket’s Governor regarding their proposal.

“We asked the Governor to allow the existing operators to use the beach areas that have already been managed or in the specific zone. We offer service to beachgoers and make a living as locals. Our jobs also support the tourism industry in Phuket especially during the tourism low-season when there are strong waves and high tides,” said Decha Sittidech, a representative from the group.

A few surfboard rentals during the surf (low) season would not be a problem but we all know how things escalate and quickly get out of hand here. And that's why Phuket's beaches have had these restrictions imposed.

I wouldn't mind seeing all of these operators who use the King's land for free ( except for the envelopes handed over to local authorities) have to put up a bunch of cash and build public facilites in the vicinity of where they think they have a right to conduct business on the beach.  Put up 2 million baht to build some facilites and maintain them, and you get a 10 year concession to run your shop.

If something like this happened, the legit operators would be not so happy to let illegal cowboys run a competing business.

Don't have a problem with them renting out a few boards at some of the different breaks but to say " the International Surfing Association (ISA) has ranked Phuket as one of the top 10 destinations for surfing", sounds like complete and utter BS (dont know and don't care about SUP).
