I have just renewed my British passport while in NZ. I returned last week. My retirement visa expires 18th May 2018. I mean to apply for a renewal visa next month.Is it necessary to get my visa transferred before then?

Visas are not transferred. Only extensions of stay and other stamps immigration does can be transferred.

I assume you have a extension of stay based upon retirement not a visa.

You can wait until next month to get the stamps transferred.
