All this time spent of catching strays, checking them for rabies and vaccinating them BUT no one thought about sterilization?

I mean, they went through the trouble of catching them, might as well perform a quick snip-snip. That would reduce the spread of strays and cost less in the long run in feeding them/taking care of them.

Yep, 'ezlip', but I know that Thai (macho-) men do have something against the 'snip-snip' for male animals... Who knows, maybe because of fear for their little attributes,  afraid their bullying and lack of positive contribution to society might bring people to the idea of castrating them? Seen it with vets and others, neuter a female, no prob, ...but a male! Are you sure? Or simply: no-no...

This has been going on for as long as I remember....when the dog reaches 3 months old it is no longer na rak so gets abandoned to run wild and bark all night.

...And bite people, or other dogs held on a line, or block the street, or ..., often/mostly with the owners watching at a distance! You'll fall on deaf ears for them to do something about it, but beware, don't kick or hit the pest, as at once it will be their beloved pet, and you will be in serious trouble!

Does this spell the beginning of the end of the soi dog - meaning those community-'owned' dogs that live their whole lives on the street but still get looked after by various people? Presumably they mainly originate as abandoned dogs.

Pity if they disappeared - they are a quaint part of Thai culture.

Don't know where you live, but in all places I know they are a pest! Nota Bene, these stray dogs don't come from planet March, most of them once (briefly, as a puppy?) had some owners and a home. But it is so eeeasy to let the poor animal wander around, not providing it shelter, food or clean water, ...or love. Very Thai IMO, don't care about anything that doesn't touch them personally, and feel responsible (what?) for less than nothing, not me...

So, I'm afraid a 'tabulla rasa' operation would be (ever?) needed, and let the 'owners' a time of two weeks to show up, pay for the chip, medal, vaccine, ...a yearly (low) tax, otherwise, show mercy to the poor animals and euthanise them in a painless humane way (not like some neighbour, tired of it all, with poisoned meatballs, or some morons (seen it) on purpose changing the trajectory of their pick-up/car to hit the dog...

A law like this will in effect greatly hurt animal welfare. Thais take to responsibility like cats to crashing surf. Having them somehow assume ownership in a way that can be proven (a prerequisite of the abandonment issue) will mean many less will want to and will abandon the animals currently in their care. Enforcement is an issue. It's more risk than many will be willing to take. Some will say "Thais are compassionate; Thais love their dogs" but a majority won't take their dogs to be fixed or even just for two shots two weeks apart to clear up the mange. When you're not willing to do that, then it's a very cursory form of love, no matter how much rice and chicken you give them.

So? Euthanise all dogs not claimed within two weeks, ...or let things go on as it is? What's your practical proposal?

A while ago i was on a petmarket, there's was a thai family with 3 very young kids in front of me....when they say the pups for sale they all grabbed one and hugged it...within a minute dad paid for them and they all walked away with their  3 pets, very happy of course.

That's how it goes sometimes....

What do you think are the probabilities for the future of these three pet dogs in 1 month, 3 months? Take off your pink shades, that's where most stray dogs start their life! Thainess...

I think that 1 pup got killed accidently by the car/motocy from neighbour somchai.

The 2nd one probably run away after they let the gate open on a hot day.

The 3rd one got worms from playing in the sand and died a week later.

My friend bought 2 beagles, she was oh so happy...a week later they were dead, probably from worms....a lot of money down the drain.

Dog disease and/or kennel cough more probably, bought a lovely, sweet ban kheow puppy from a well known specialised C-M breeder, we spent a lot of time and money to save him, but... 'Macky' had had all vaccines, sure, sure, ...but it had both diseases in a high grade, and suffered, deeply, for weeks, with a huge dignity, full of love, till ONE Thai vet (the FOUR others refused, ...'Buddhism') accepted to secretely(!) euthanise the poor thing. We're still very thankfull to her, and pay her a visit once in a while. Hope in your next life you're biting into many hypocrites' a..es Macky!
