Puts to bed the false claims that kids today are useless and disengaged. 

What many of the right wing pundits missed is that these kids are progressive conservatives. They work hard and are focused and subscribe to values that used to be identified as core conservative values such as politeness, responsibility and living within one's means. These kids know how to save money. they also know how to spend.  LOL. I see it with my nephews and nieces. They hold core  values like not judging on the basis of religion, race or creed. This march was a voicing of responsible goals much as the civil rights marches in the 50's and early 60's were. That was their grand parents era. Today the  slobs who went to races buggering up the economy and housing market in the 80's and 90's are about to meet a younger version of their parents who will  give them a taste of the discipline they never had. Revenge of the grandparents  will soon be upon us.

They walk among us! I do hope a bunch of kids take their guns off them! What could they do? Shoot them? 

In my opinion, no matter how much I admire their efforts, it’s like putting a drop of water next to the ocean. And these kids are the drop of water. The scales are so ridiculously outweighed on the side of corporations and lobbyists and all those who really run the country. I heard one of the kids today say that the power that be are scared, but I personally don’t even think these kids have even gotten their attention yet. America is a great place; things can get done putting pressure on organizations like this. I just think the pressure is going to have to be applied ten times harder and ten times longer for even the slightest impact to be able to have an opportunity to take place... and sorry for even saying it, but I don’t think the kids have it in them. Drop your futures, drop your schooling, organize, sacrifice, spend ten years on it and show us how much you want it, because single day “we want this” rallies don’t often get anything done.

I think they realize this is only the start but I don't think it's nothing or hopeless. Their stated agenda is realistic and reasonable. A plan is already in place. Register youth and allies and get out the vote. Hold town meetings everywhere and make all candidates commit to a position or deal with the consequences. This is a good plan. Now follow through is needed. I won't predict that either way but it's not unreasonable to hope.

 

Also consider good or bad the USA is an extremely youth focused culture. So what these youth want if they keep pushing can make a difference.

 

 

Politically speaking in the last election Bernie Sanders came very close to the nomination largely based on the youth vote because he was speaking to their issues which actually weren't much about guns. Now it will be. Double the youth participation from the low rates now and the change could be dramatic on many issues including universal health care. I can see the tie in between addressing gun violence and universal health care quite easily both ideologically and politically.

Yes, the thing about Usofa is that its peoples are highly ideological ie committed to varying sets of ideas & willing to argue and even struggle for them. They believe in things - which, depending on the particular network of beliefs, can be better or worse. [cf Australia where noone believes in anything much except the Government coming to the rescue - which makes life reasonably quiet and comfortable for most people, but rather boring.]

Funny then how you will still allow said children to own weapons of war without any proper background checks. If they are responsible enough to own a weapon of war, they are responsible enough to vote, have a beer and legally have sex. "Only 17 years old". Alexander the Great was "Only 17 years old" when his innovation and ingenuity single handedly turned the Battle of Charonea into a decisive victory for the Macedonians. Be careful of underestimating 17 yr olds, that 17 yr old has the time, vision and passion to make CHANGE, and this school shooting has been the final catalyst that will start a chain reaction of events that will achieve more than any politician ever could.

 

And before you retort that "Alexander the Great may have only been 17 but they were different times' , I would remind you that your troublesome 2nd amendment was also written in 'different times, FOR different times'.

Here's a picture of the 7,000+ children's shoes in front of the capitol building of children killed by gun violence since Sandy Hook.   That is more than the 6,000+ US troops killed since 2000.   

 

 

 

 

The young people who set up and organized the "March for our Lives" have faced death threats, they have been accused of being paid 'crisis actors' even by people like Donald Trump Jr.,  Emma Gonzales, the young lady who survived and spoke, was called a 'Skin Head Lesbian' by a Republican congressional candidate.   

 

The threats and bullying that they have endured should never be tolerated against students who haven't even graduated from high school.   

 

Those shootings not only cost lives, but there will many, many students suffering from PTSD and have to have years of counseling to deal with the ordeal.   The gov't is now suggesting more guns in schools, more 'resource officers', training and arming teachers -- but not increasing spending on actual education.

 

They have taken away no one's rights. They have disarmed no one.  They have only used their 1st Amendment right to speak.    

 

This is how a country treats it's youth?   Their voices need to be heard.

Yes, of course but this current congress is "locked in" until the November midterms. So there will be anything of any consequence that's realistically possible before then. That's why focusing on registering and voting makes perfect sense.

It will take time, but this congress may start getting very nervous when the amounts they are getting from lobby groups like the NRA become wide-spread public knowledge.   They may find themselves falling behind in votes to more progressive candidates.

Yes, but it won't be this congress. That's the reality. 

Something could have happened big RIGHT NOW if "trump" had supported it. 

He totally caved to the NRA so that's over at least until the midterms. This is a long haul thing.

When it becomes them who is kicked out of office they might take notice. Thats the thing.  Suddenly 20000 voters sign up and they have no intention of voting for you and are you going to find the new voters to counter them. Hopefully this will bankrupt the NRA
