How to declare our goods before leaving ?

Featured Replies

Hello,

How to declare our goods before leaving ? Has anyone done it yet ? I don't want to pay taxes again on my stuff that I already own.

Thanks

This was one of the more idiotic announcements made recently...  But in reality, there is a semblance of logic in those in instigated such regulations - It was in response to the press coverage over the past year of various people getting caught with numerous handbags etc (boxes) with the clear intention of bringing them in for sale.

The response of the customs is to bring in this 'registration of valuables' on departure as an avenue for charging those abusing the customs regulations.

As not uncommon in Thailand, these regulations assist those in positions of power to use their power and do nothing for the protection of the average law-abiding citizen.

In reality, however, my guess is nothing will change for the average traveler... but the worry is that without a Customs Departure Receipt we fall foul of import charges. And of course, the line for the Customs Departure Receipt is likely to be hellish.

The head of customs recently announced that they are not interested in the 'average person' only in catching those who are clearly bringing something in for sale... (i.e. 10 handbags or 5 watches etc).

Thus, I think we are perfectly safe with our MacBook, Rolex, Designer clothes and a Wife sporting her Chanel Handbag...  as long as they do not have the sales tags still on them and are not with boxes etc.

It may not hurt to hold on to your receipts of items purchased in Thailand.

With regards to the question itself... How to declare our goods and receive a Customs Departure Receipt? - I've no idea and my guess is that no one at the airport knows either !!!...

I'm not a receipt guy, all my receipts are in the trash, even for stuff bought last week. Most of my stuff is old but valuable, macbook pro, high end phone, high end watch, high end tablet, high end camera.

From her on the Thai customs website. http://en.customs.go.th/content.php?ini_content=departing_from_thailand&lang=en&left_menu=menu_departing_from_thailand

DEPARTING FROM THAILAND
Expensive Items Intended for Re-Importation

If you are departing Thailand with expensive items e.g. cameras, video cameras, laptop computers, tape recorders, etc. and you are intended to bring them back in Thailand, you may register these items- as long as they have serial numbers or other unique, permanent, marking items- to Customs at the departure airport after checking in and receiving a boarding pass. The Customs officials will record the exportation of such personal items intending for re-importation. All items registered will be allowed duty free entry when you return to Thailand.
