BKK > Ubon Ratchathani by train, good places to visit en route?

We are heading to Ubon Ratchathani in May for a wedding.

So far we have a flight booked from Phuket > BKK, and we thought we would spend 4 days travelling our way on and off the train route rather than just fly on to Ubon Ratch,

any recommended places to stop and visit on the way?

And once we get to Ubon Ratch any travel tips?

Thanks

Looks like the route takes you north to ayutthaya then north/n east via nakon rachasima buriram and surin. I would reccomend any of these destinations.  You could stay overnight and watch a football match at thunder castle and visit the night markets in buriram. Surin is not far from there.

According to my tastes, there is much more interesting travelling to do from Ubon, than on the way to Ubon.

There are interesting places along the way, in Buriram, Sisaket...but not exactly close to the train station...so you would have to find some mean of transportation everytime you would stop...and be ready to travel hundreds of kilometers (these provinces are very big), for example to visit the site of Phanum Rung in Buriram.

It would be easier to rent a car in Ubon and then travel around during a few days...

Thanks, we will spend a few days in Ubon when we get there.

Does not seem to a huge amount to do on the way, we are thinking maybe Saraburi area now.

This is close to Korat. Korat has become a large, charmless city but ok for a day.

Buriram city is an ok place can walk around close to the train station.

In Ubon Best to stay in the old part of town near the river and thung sri muang. Always something happening in the park, there is a weekend walking street and a nightly food market. Plenty of good places to eat in the area and the morning market near the river is worth a look. The hotels in the area are ok, not deluxe.

The T.A.T. is on Khuanthani st in that area. Good maps.

Thanks, Phimai looks interesting. The wedding is at a hotel close to the river so we will have chance to explore that area.

We are also looking now at Kaeng Khoi - Saraburi on the way up.
