A Woman Of Bangkok

Years ago I read a book which I am 90% sure was entitled "A Woman of Bangkok". It was written in the 1940's and is about an Englishman named Reg (Retch to the Thais). He was sent to Thailand as a company rep. and the book is about his experiences with Thai women and Thailand in general. Surprisingly, little seems to have changed and anyone living here today will relate to and laugh at his experiences. It was a great read especially as the author had a way of writing English the way it is spoken by Thai's.

I lent it to someone and it was never returned. It is now out of print.

Has anyone else read this book? What did you think of it?

If it was you who borrowed my copy about 10 years ago can you please return it? :o

I think the borrower is just trying to sell it via Amazon.com behind your back:

"WOMAN OF BANGKOK (Mass Market Paperback) by Jack Reynolds"

Comments: RARE HARDCOVER IN DUSTJACKET. Published by Ballantine Books, 1956, 1st edition, Book is good with pages VERY browned and a bit of silverfish damage around the edges. Dustjacket is good with faded spine and overall wear. We pack securely and ship promptly!"

And all that for $ 24.99. *wicked grin* As I am not sure if a link to amazon is ok(?!), so better google the bold line above and you will find.. ...if nobody else does so before you do...

Enjoy!

Great book, along with that other classic, The World of Suzie Wong. It is reprinted from time to time. I saw it in Asia Books several years ago.

I'm sure that if was reprinted it would sell like hotcakes. Its way better than all the recent rubbish that's on the shelves. Anybody know if copyright lasts forever or if it expires after a while? I sense an opportunity here.

It lasts for 70 years after the author's death - or at least, that's the standard international convention.

There are ways for the family to keep the copyright much longer than that.

Yes. Forever.

We can thank Mickey Mouse for that. Walt Disney Corporation continues to legislate (through their congressmen) longer and longer copywrites. Search on "public domain" for some articles about this.

Yes,the story was filmed and was on UK tv. It was IN the 80's not the 50's

The man / the author / film maker was in fact an Ozzie. The story took place at the Rose Hotel. Probably still got a videotape of this prog.

The Ozzie was in fact heavily criticised at the time for exploiting the girl as it was all done for financial reasons and the girl was the innocent victim who did not get a cent. Most criticm came from one episode where he is shown filming the girl in bed despite her cries to stop .

Only in the US. They do not control the world (yet).

In England a large number of early rock and roll material is about to come out of copyright as it is over 50 years from date of publishing.

The origonal authors have been fighting this without success. They thought of pop music as disposable and did not think it would still be an earner in their dotage. Many did not think they would make it to their dotage. :o

I have just found a website for DK Books http://www.dk.co.th/index_en.htm. No sign of "A Woman of Bangkok" on there but there is some other interesting publications.

I will email them to ask if there is any chance they will do a reprint and will post any reply here.

Thanks for the information.

IF you are inetereted in buying this book, it is easy to find. My curiousity was aroused and a couple of weeks ago I ordered a "very good" condition used hardback book from a bookseller in Australia. It seems like there are alot of old copies down there. They are shipping it by sea, so it won't get here for a while yet.

I found it under the other title, "A Sort of Beauty" or something like that, look back in the thread, someone mentioned it. There were also several paperback volumes available, may have been under the "A Woman of Bangkok" title, I don't remember for sure, but it seems like the last printing date I noticed was around 1970's or 80's.

amazon, abebooks, alibris, are all good places to search, good luck.

Another great book worth a read is 'Letters from Bangkok'

Story of a chinese immigrant way back in the 30's and how his family assimilated into Thailand and the problems they had. A good peek at the Thais.

and no its not for sales :o but very right...interesting read especially if you want to find out about thailand back in those days when chinese started to arrive here.........
