BANGKOK, 9th April 2018 (NNT) – Deputy Prime Minister Somkid Jatusripitak has dismissed a rumor that he is planning to form his own political party.

Denying news reports that he will register a party to run for office in the next general election, the deputy premier for economic affairs said he would continue to support and assist PM Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha in his endeavor to unite the nation, pointing out that political conflicts have plagued the country for a long time and that he personally doesn’t want to see any form of violence or social division as in the past.

Without peace and unity, national development won't take place and people’s living standards won't improve, he stressed.

Calling on the nation to look ahead to the next election, Somkid said members of the public must support politicians who uphold good governance, honesty, and ethical standards, adding that he wants to see the new generation enter politics for the sake of diversity and creativity.

He needs to add "also as in the present."

If he can remain relatively neutral he might find a position with the next elected government. For almost three years he has favored Thailand's application to TPP consistent with many Thai academics and economists but contrary to Prayut's lack of interest. Now after President Trump has withdrawn the US from TPP,  Thailand may join TPP.

But Somkid would need, if he wants political attention, to talk about new directions for Thailand under a nonmilitary government that lacks absolute power and has more economic interest in ASEAN and global marketing than in China.

Well, that's a bugger!
