April 13, 20188 yr Road deaths, injuries up for first 2 days of Songkran By The Nation In just the first two days of the Songkran holiday’ “seven-day dangerous period” from April 11-17, a total of 99 people have been killed in traffic accidents, with another 1,085 injured. The road accident count for the beginning days of this year’s notorious Songkran period have increased compared to the same period last year, while nearly 60,000 drunk drivers were arrested by the end of the second day of strict road safety monitoring. The Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department’s Road Safety Centre on Friday reported a total 1,026 road accidents occurred during the first two of the “seven dangerous days”, leaving 1,085 people injured and 99 killed. It was found that the number of accidents, injuries, and deaths on the road has increased this year, since on the second day of the 2017 Songkran holiday’s seven dangerous days there were 994 accidents, 1,035 injured people, and 95 deaths. National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) deputy spokesperson Colonel Sirichan Ngathong said that road travel was still far from safe, with officers finding 56,051 people driving dangerously or drunk while driving on day two of the operation to suppress drunk driving. Sirichan said that 32,592 of those cases involved motorcyclists. Officers have seized 835 motorcycles and total confiscated 356 motorcycle driving licences. The remaining 23,459 cases involved private cars or public vehicles, leading to 494 seized cars and 1,741 confiscated driver’s licences. At the conclusion of the overall operation for the first two days, there were 59,390 cases of reckless driving, with 38,546 sent to court and 1,475 vehicles seized. April 13, 20188 yr Popular Post Way to go Thailand. I knew you could do it. Keep up the excellent work for being the Number 1 country for highway deaths in the world. NOT. Edited April 13, 20188 yr by khwaibah
April 13, 20188 yr Popular Post This cannot be correct, before the holiday government lackies were spouting off about 7% reduction this year. They said that there were measures in place to make songkran safer. Edited April 14, 20188 yr by colinneil

Never mind, at least they will hang on to No.1 status for at least another year..
April 14, 20188 yr Popular Post 60,000 drinks arrested in just two days is an absolutely staggering number and shows that drivers just don't give a <deleted> about other road users. Whoever is is charge should hang their head in shame and resign because it's obvious they have no idea how to deal with the problem.
April 14, 20188 yr Popular Post Don't think anyone here is surprised by this. Terribly sad RIP to those that have passed and also for the many, many more to come.
April 14, 20188 yr Popular Post The Thai population has spoken. They wholeheartedly believe in the right to drink and drive at any speed they wish, forego crash helmets and create water throwing hazards on the highway. Rules are not to be obeyed but broken. Its been going on for years and efforts to stop it are repeatedly ignored. All thats left is to decide if this a majority decision.
April 14, 20188 yr Popular Post Reading the same news posts year after year for the last 30 years or so, drunks, speeding, arrests, dead, injured by the dozens that will culminate to several hundred (400-500) tragic loss of lives year after year, after year, what can be done? in reality, nothing much, there are people who will continue to drive recklessly and utter disregards to road rules no matter what you say or do to change this behavior....

April 14, 20188 yr It still amazes me that it has taken them 2562 years to get to this point.....Somethings wrong in paradise.

April 14, 20188 yr Popular Post 60,000 drunk drivers in two days and 59,000 cases of reckless driving? That overtakes by a long way many countries annual totals. Truly disgraceful.
April 14, 20188 yr 60,000 done for drink driving. some vehicles confiscated, some licences confiscated, some to appear in court and some nothing it appears. it's a bloody shambles basically. how can they hope to improve things

Simply a lost cause, like trying to herd cats or teach basic addition to 6 month olds.

April 14, 20188 yr This is tragic...too much so for "smart ass" remarks....Each and every one of these tragedies leave devastated families in their wake. RIP..to all the deceased.
April 14, 20188 yr This is what happens when you have a country run by the mouth with never any action. How could it posssible get better by doing nothing?

It is probably because of this 99 people have been killed in traffic accidents, with another 1,085 injured. Thailand initially reports dead at scene But of those "1085 injured" many will not make it
