Hi all,

I have used this website for a number of years for help and information regarding all Thai related subjects.

I would also like to say thanks to anyone in advance who would be able to shed light on my particular situation.

I have searched this specific subject but couldn't really find anything.

So here goes.

To break down my situation I currently reside in the UK. I was born to a Thai Father and an English Mother. I was born in Bangkok and lived in Thailand (Phuket) for the first 6 years of my life when we can to the UK.

My mum registered me as a Thai citizen and then registered me as a British citizen. So I have both a Thai Passport and a British Passport.

My dilemma is now that I have left my passport to expire in 2010 I want to apply for my Thai ID card.

First of all, I don't have a visa in my Thai Passport because I have a British passport so I am a little worried if I go to renew my Thai passport, will the authorities take it away because the Government don't allow dual Nationality. I'm not sure if I'm over thinking this, but this to me is a real concern.

I have my Thai birth Certificate and my Tabianban as well as an expired passport. I wanted to know if I need to fly to Thailand to get my Thai id card and renew my passport and what information will I need to do this if it is my Birth certificate, Tabianban and my passport or will I need any other information?

I really don't want to lose my Thai nationality because of a formality.

Would I need to get a lawyer to help me with this?

My sister went back to Thailand about 10 years back to get her Thai ID but she is fully Thai without a UK passport and she has a visa for the UK stamped in her passport. Also, the reason why I didn't want to renew my Thai passport until I was 30 is because I didn't really fancy joining the National Service.

Thanks again for any advice on this thread, I hope that I was clear in my situation.

You Thai nationality will not be revoked.

In your Thai passport, the number under "Personal No." is the ID number for your Thai ID card. Go with your Thai birth certificate and your Thai passport to your local district office and apply for your ID card.

Thank you very much for the information, Will this matter if my Thai Passport has expired?

Will I need to take my Tabianban as well?

Again thank you :-)

No problem if you passport is expired. You can even enter Thailand with a expired passport.

You will need to show a registry in a tambien ban to get a ID card and passport.

A couple of points:

- Thailand has no issue with dual nationality

- unless you are going back to live in Thailand there is no urgent need for an ID card

- you should be able to renew your passport in London on the strength of your old passport

- this can be used for travel to/from Thailand with no issue

As for your sister, she doesn’t need to get a visa for the Uk in her Thai passport. So long as she is a dual citizen she can use both passports without issue

Also be aware that since you are male, the authorities might want to know whether or not you have done your Thai military service, unless you are old enough to not have to worry about that any more (I think it's 30 or 40).

And while you can always enter Thailand even with an expired Thai passport, you can't leave Thailand on an expired Thai passport. As mentioned above, the Thai embassy in London should be able to provide you with a Thai passport - but I believe that Thai passports have a validity of five years, not ten. So you might be doing this a few times :)

The general rule for people who hold dual citizenship is to enter/leave Thailand on their Thai passport, and their other country of citizenship using that country's passport. Also, if you entered on one passport, you have to leave on that passport - so if you entered Thailand on an expired Thai passport, you would not be able to leave without getting a new Thai passport. And if you entered on a UK passport, you would have all the visa concerns that the rest of us have to deal with.

As ubonjoe says above, you would need to be registered in a Tabian Baan in order to get your ID card, and once you have that apply for the new passport. I am guessing that if you already had a Thai passport, are probably already registered in a Tabian Baan, and may have even had an ID card before. The Thai embassy should be able to help you sort those out anyway.

If you only want to visit Thailand for a short stay, you can still enter on your UK passport, and then maybe think about the other Thai documents while here in Thailand, although make sure that if you enter on your UK passport that you also leave on the same passport, or else your 'UK self' would be on overstay.

The age is 30 that they will no longer look for a  male to serve in the military . In the USA and I think the UK as well the op could petition the Thai embassy for an exemption to serve in the military as he is living overseas. The  person is  supposed to do that before his 21st birthday.

My son, English father, Thai mother, born in the UK got his ID card this year up in Khon Kaen. He has both Thai and UK passports and has since been about 2 years old. One of his uncles is some big cheese in Udon Thani so I think that made the process smoother. Please bear in mind, because my son was worried about this, that you are on the list for national service once you get the ID card.
